I'm curious as to our pitching philosophy yesterday...

We had two games to play. I get that.
But, why leave any pitcher in to take a 6 run inning? Maineri's done this several times now. He leaves a player in to wither and die on the vine.
Yesterday in the 1st game with Gausman. Alsup against UF. Ott against Florida.
If you're going to pull a kid in the 2nd inning, why let him give up 6 runs? Or am I missing something? Just seems to me that with only 7 inning games, pitching isn't at such a premium. You can make it through because you're worried about 4 less IP, total.

I think he just wants to give the pitcher a chance to work out of it. sooner or later these guys are going to have to learn to withstand a bad inning or two without being rescued by the coach. Agreed, PM may have left a few in a little too long. But what does yanking them early teach them? To give up? This coach doesn't do that.

Have to let a young pitcher work through adversity

Because we don't have very much in the way of relief pitching

I think Mainieri has been a little slow to pull the trigger when trouble starts. I think Gausman had already given up 3 runs and was still in a jam before he even sent anyone to the bullpen to start warming. Same with Alsup against Florida.
At some point the pitchers have to sack up and not let things get so out of control, but Mainieri can be a little more proactive imo and not wait until 4 or 5 straight batters have reached before getting the wheels turning....especially in a 7 inning game with a completely rested bullpen.

I agree, but he's always late in getting someone in there, even if it's a Sr. on the hill. After a couple of hard hits/walks/runs, he should have the pen working, and he never has anyone ready.

Our bullpen is mediocre at best. Until our bullpen improves, we don't have many options when it comes to leaving guys like Gausman in the game.

It was a 2 out base clearing double that led to the final three runs. A different pitch and it might have only been 3. You make it sound like they got to 4, then we left him in, then they got 5, and we still stuck with him. That wasn't the case

I would say that I agree with you, but he had used ONE pitcher the night before, and only had to make it through 14 IP with two guys that are normally good for 6-7IP/outing.
He had his entire bullpen which was on 3+ days of rest, plus two starters. With 4 less IP to worry about.
That doesn't make sense to me. In any way.

...hmmmmm, my modified fearless prediction: This year's base-a-ball team gonna struggle to be .500 season...too many young 'uns.

On the other hand, you make it sound like you didn't really read my post all that well.

True, but the bases were loaded with 3 runs in and if I'm not mistaken that is when the bullpen finally started warming. Farmer hit the double, Cone got a hit, and then he got out of the inning.

could be because he realizes he has an extrememly young team and pitching staff and also realizes that this is baseball, which is a game that not too many people fully understand, and there is a whole lot of ball to be played. this team will peak at the right time. i'm not sure we'll make it far into the post season because this team just doesn't have what it takes. It does not have a deep bullpen and there are a few holes in the lineup. but you can book your trips to omaha for the next two years

I like the pitchers we've brought in, and the ones that will likely make it to campus next year. But we're going to need a few more bats.

The case was Georgia scored 6 runs before Mainieri even sent anyone to the pen to warm up.
