Preventing future college dropouts
March 22, 2011 4:40 PM
College officials across the nation are attempting to address the issue of alarmingly high college dropout rates among undergrads. Michelle Miller reports from Baton Rouge, La.
Amazing that he's managed to stay in school this far for a guy who many think is too dumb or lazy to learn his routes.

Well this isn't a very positive report.

Pretty big reality check on kids graduating HS today without being taught on how to properly study, or succeed in academics.
The one statement that cuaght me offguard was "It's our job to provide students with degrees, not to weed out the ones who think they can't cut it."
It's high school's job to provide diplomas, it's the exact purpose of college to weed out those who can't cut it, and not give undeserved degrees IMO.

I thought athletes only played sports?

If you think any LSU football player has even stepped in a classroom, you are naive. FACT.

do we know the rest of the story on that girl featured in the report.....
why do i have the feeling that she went to LSU, partied her rear end off and never went to class....
someone posted some advice to freshmen a while back that is very valid....first go to class!!!!

I did that when I went to college the first time. Dropped out and went back 2 years later. Never ended up crying about it on national TV, though. I knew I fricked up.

All I know is that I feel horribly for her. That poor girl is going to be ruthlessly mocked for the rest of her life. I don't know what inducement she received from CBS to appear in that segment, but I'm pretty sure whatever it was wasn't a good deal.

my freshman gpa was a 1.7 and was on probation....two years in the army and i came back to college....got off probation in one semester and still screwed around, but did what i needed to do to graduate with above a 2.5.....
when i grew up and went back to college again....it's amazing what happens when you go to class and study!!!!!

the girl should have hired a tutor or went to some of the help groups at LSU. Don't be lazy.

I always thought that morning classes on Thursdays or Fridays were optional for freshmen students. I mean, how else are you supposed to party on Wednesday and Thursday nights?
Tuesday morning classes are more serious though. You should only go to Reggie's on Monday nights if you don't have an exam the next morning imho.

Am I wrong for not feeling sorry for that broad?

A fairly cheap shot by CBS at LSU. Taken as a whole, the nationwide college graduation rate is not much higher. A sad fact that has little to do with athletics or Russell Shepard.

For failing out? frick no.
For having her epic fail immortalized forever on network television? Perhaps...

I'm not even sure "weeding out" is a bad thing.
That statement from the Maryland woman saying that their job is "to give out degrees to students" was sort of troubling to me, but I will talk about this issue no more unless the discussion pops up on the Poli Board...
