The difference between Holden and Jones (Gold Cup thread)

Assuming Jones will fill in the vacant spot (thanks to the english a-hole), how much of a difference in quality should we really expect in the Gold Cup? I kind of feel that we will be fine with Jermaine, based off of what I have seen in the previous friendlies.

I think it will play the same, really.
(Assuming Edu and Jones behind Donovan-Bradley-Dempsey)
Bradley and Holden are both good "motor" players, and Bradley is at least as good of a tackler as Holden (though Holden REALLY surprised me in that regard this season). I don't know that Bradley reads the game as well.... but it's what we've got.
The big thing is that those three do the heavy lifting, so Donovan, Dempsey and Jozy can return the 5-0 favor to the Messicans.

He was leading the EPL at one point in tackles. I need to see if I can find the stat again.
However, Jermaine Jones is a great player. He will help us tremendously. He has been kinda lost this past year it seems tho

Great thread Pablo. Holden doesn't have the speed to play on the International level on the wing like he did in the MLS. Owen Coyle realized this and put him as the mid-field distributor for an EPL team. Holden has been one of Bolton's three best players this season playing a position he really hasn't played before. He really should be moved to the inside for the USMNT and take most set pieces and corners. His injury is a huge blow IMO.
That being said Jones is a fricking beast and will help the US big time. I am looking forward to what Chandler has to offer as well.

Has anyone followed Jermaine Jones since he has been at Blackburn? I haven't seen any matches whatsoever.

Lets just say they are more aggressive and forward in the approach. Jones is an upgrade for sure.

Holden is an Attacking mid and Jones is a defensive mid. They probably would have played different positions, but maybe not.

He's putting time in. He seems to be committing a lot of fouls.

Right, but it seems like Jones is a bit more versatile in that yes he is a d.mid, but has also been very active in attacking. i certainly wouldn't pair Holden with Bradley back there.
to me the wild card seems to be Maurice Edu. I feel like he has shown some attacking ability. I don't see him as a replacement for Stu by any means, but I can definitely see him in more of an attacking role than in the past where it was either him or Rico with Bradley.

He has always been aggressive. At one point, I thought it'd be interesting to see how he'd do on the back line. However, he has really good ball skills. The assist to Altidore was really nice. I forgot who we were playing it was a 2 game series and his first or 2nd cap for the USMNT.

Really has no place.

Of course not, but I don't think Skeletor would have either. I was expecting him to push Dempsey up as a second striker or CAM and move Holden into his starting spot.
We certainly won't be getting that now. I think the impact isn't place and plug, It means that another striker will probably see the field.

hard to say. it is a better team on paper than we fielded last world cup, for sure.
it should be more negative than it would have been, but i'm not so sure. in a small sample size, jones has shown that there is more to him than the physically dominant destroyer that we thought that we were getting.
on the defensive side, jones is a player that relies upon physical dominance and hard tackling. while holden and bradley are good tacklers, they, especially bradley, rely upon their positioning to break up play by intercepting the ball.
jones has played at an extremely high level and will almost assuredly be the only major fixture on our team with cl experience.
if we go to a midfield three, any combination of those four will dominate almost any team in concacaf and will probably make life a living hell for mexico.

If we're switching Jones for Holden in our lineup, I'd consider that a problem. Would leave us with extremely little in the way of creativity and distribution in our midfield.

Temporarily scrap the 4-2-3-1?
