I don't feel as bad about this game because LSU went to California and whipped USC's arse in their backyard.
$C was heavily favored in that game as well. I always forget to put that down as one of my all time favorite games. That poor white horse of $C's, Traveler, and their mascot in the leather skirt didn't get to ride around the Coliseum that day.
You can't spell SUCKS without U S C.

That whole play was a mess. The sad part is that in 1979 all facemask calls were 15 yards. Instead of 3rd and 14 in Usc territory, they had 1st and 10 on our side of the 50. I believe there was just over 2 minutes remaining.

Yes, that play was a cluster fudge. I couldn't tell from the video if the $C player caught the ball or not.
LSU got screwed.

Then, of course, there are those that say LSU tore SC up. But the stats tell a different story.
LSU did tear USC UP. That USC team should have beaten that LSU team by 20 at least based on the talent levels of oth teams. I am over the fact that USC won. BUT If there were EVER a moral victory for the ages it was this game.

Because the condoms should have lost. Charlie Mac, on his deathbed, maintained that the facemask on Benjy Thibodaux was a bad call. I was there and it was.
MYTH. The film shows, with certainty, otherwise.

Neither the box score stats nor the score show that. If you meant played with better emotion and passion, then yes. But I think you meant on both sides of the ball.

Sort of strange to see this game so popular for LSU fans? I understand that USC was a premier team back then, but a loss is a loss so I don't understand the luv for this lost
I was at the game- back when UHigh kids used to get in with a student ID.
To me the game sums up the history of LSU football: playing with heart and passion against superior talent in our stadium. And that was back when Tiger Stadium was the real deal- smell of bourbon everywhere, and the roar was so loud you couldnt even hear yourself speak during timeouts.
I remember LSU players diving to the sidelines during late substitutions to avoid too many men on the field penalties. Just an incredibly passionate game. And the only loss where I wasnt griping about playcalling or some other coaching issue afterwards.
Plus- you cant beat the tear-away jerseys.

I remember that game. LSU got screwed on a FM call on Melancon, a defensive end on a punt. But for that LSU beats Charles White and USC.

Who brought it up in this thread? USC was busted for cheating so honestly.....we know who the best was in 2003.
No shite! That SCum fan is such an idiot, that he tells someone in this thread the phantom facemask was 30 years ago... "get over it", then HE brings up split NC shortly after. Hypocrite much? If you want someone to get over something, stop bringing it up. Or at least stop adding fuel to the fire.
SC idiots don't even know what they are saying half the time. Idiot condom fan is idiot

Sorry to breath life into a tired thread.
I was there in '79 and saw it in person I am privledged to say. I remember it all. I also remember looking at the schedule for next season and not seeing USC on it. The return trip came 4 or 5 years later and I remember the anticipation that I felt waiting for this game. I was hoping for another magical unforgettable game. Unfortunately, it was not even close. The collisium is like a giant cemetary. I remember seeing the empty seats and noticing how cavernous the stadium was. It was so quiet. The antithesis of the night in '79. I felt a little robbed of my satisfaction even after LSU punched them in the mouth that day. 2 completely different atmospheres for a game.
USC no match for LSU today on any level.

The only time I ever paid more than face value for a LSU home game. Paid $20 to see a game that ranks among the best ever played in Tiger Stadium.

You are right. Even most LSU fans have forgotten that game

There in the NW corner of the student section. Hoarse for days after the game.
Two other things, Sports Illustrated did the story, I remember a line to the effect of, "In Tiger Stadium people still sing the National Anthem." I thought that said a lot about the writer.
Second, the Morning Advocate ran a story written by John Ed Bradley after the game. He wrote that the USC players' legs were as big around as LSU's players waists.

USC's offensive line averaged about 15 pounds bigger per player than the freaking Saints offensive line.
If you get to watch the game sometime, it's a big ol' difference between them and LSU.
It's a shame that people think the game is talked about so much (partially) because of bitterness over the 2003 season. It has absolutely zilch to do with that, and it's still the greatest game I ever saw.
