I ran into an older guy who said he was told by his doctor not to go out anymore because it's too dangerous, for this reason. I responded that I didn't want to live in a world where I couldn't fish.

So, my question is - what advice would you give to him. I went down a list of protective measures, with the "I ain't quitting" mentality, but I'd like to get some other advice. He doesn't have skin cancer, but according to his doctor, he's at high risk for it. I suppose that if you think he should just call it quits, that's the only answer you have to give, but if not, what advice (aside from SPF 1,000,000 sun block and clothes that fully cover his skin) would you give him? Any other health tips would be appreciated.

Wow, this post hits home to me. I am so guilty of neglecting proper skin treatment when hitting the lakes. Here in Arizona melanoma is a big deal an d I usualy go out with no lotion on. I hate the mess and always live knowing one day I'll really regret it. Your friend is me in the future - I hope not though.
Best of luck to him, blueboy

My dad has had so many treatments for skin cancer because he would fish and play golf with no hat. I learned from him to wear the shite. I hate it, but I take his word.

A lady at work recently had 4 spots removed from her face and said it was excruciating.

My former business partner passed away from melanoma. His hobbies were fishing and drinking beer. His death was one of the most hidous things I have ever seen in my life, absolutely horrible. Skin was leathered from the sun.

Like a white dude sombrero. Amazingly well made hats. They'll give you a new one if you wear it out and they'll let you have another one half price if you lose it. I'm out on the sailboat constantly and I haven't had to wear sun screen in forever.

I'll bet you look a lot like that too:

Here's a good alternative, but not as big/effective:

My God those are ugly!

But if it keeps you alive

I have had 9 moles cut off...the last two came back pre cancerous...meaning they WERE NOT cancer, yet the cells they contained COULD, if not removed be a problem later.

For that reason, I am now a skin auditing mofo (looking at all my moles and stuff) and am absolutely addicted to the aerosol spray sunblocks, Coppertone Sport for the golf course, and Bullfrog for the lake and Gulf. Reapply often.

I looked at those wide brim Columbia hats today at Academy, just cant make the switch. But I had an uncle die without ears........................I want to keep my ears

I used to not wear any sunscreen. My girl makes me which is good. I have learned it's important. Especially you boys fishing down south. I have had burns before from fishing all day here and there. Nothing has compared to a burn from being inshore or offshore LA. Protect your skin.

We get a bit skeered when the bright yellow ball appears in the sky... Sun is rare up here.

Tell him to fish. Cancers that he got from todays sun exposure would not show up for about 17-20 years.

I always try to wear sunscreen when I'm out for extended periods.

I have also become a big fan of these: LINK

I wear a wide brim Columbia hat as well

Lastly, I see a dermatologist every year to get checked for skin cancer. Cancer is one thing that absolutely terrifies me.

Used to use boonie hats but they aren't as good when you're on the water. That T2 is like having a tent on your head. And if I'm miles from shore, I really don't care what I look like.

Side of his neck. Took it off, came back. Took some of his lymph nodes out, came back. Ended up with tumors on his spine, couldn't see, hear, eat, swallow.

Long sleeves, long pants, big hat, & sunscreen.

And he needs sunscreen even under the hat. If sunlight didn't get under hats we wouldn't wear shades.

As an avid fisherman and a physician, I try to remember that the goal of medical care is a healthy patient. This doesn’t always mean a happy patient. However, the mental health of a patient is also very important to their overall health.

There are a few rare instances where I might recommend a patient avoid sun contact at all costs either temporarily or permanently. However, by and large, I try daily to get my patients to get off their couches and get outside.

There are so many products available now to protect you from UV damage that there is no reason for the vast majority of fishermen to have to give up their love. With full length pants, long sleeve shirts, extremely light weight gloves, balaclavas, hats, and wrap around shades not an inch of skin has to be exposed. And since all of it is available with SPF protection built in it is even better.

This does not even include the shelves of sun blocks available. Zinc oxide is best for those high exposure areas like nose cheeks and ears.

Personally, during mid day summer exposure, I wear long pants and long sleeve shirts made of thin light and quick drying nylon with built in SPF 50. I also wear a wide brim hat and UVA and UVB blocking shades. I put clear zinc oxide on my nose, cheeks, ears, backs of my hands, and neck. I use SPF 30 oil less sun block on any other areas that will be exposed when I’m not going to wear long pants/sleeves.

Notice sun block is different and bettter at protecting you than sun screen.
