Looking for a used boat and Bass Boats are a dime a dozen right now. What are the limitations?

The bass boat I use is only 15 and a half feet but it does it's job perfectly in the bay and up in the rivers such as Bon Secour. The only time I've had a little trouble is if a storm is coming and waves get pretty big and rock you.

I do it all the time. They fish really do not care what kind of boat you are in.

The only real issue I can think of is that most bass boats are carpeted while most bay boats are not. So catching a bunch of reds and specs in a bass boat usually makes a little more mess, but that is what car washes are for.

Used to do it. Only draw back is getting all those scales out the carpet. Its a bitch! Also, any storm that will catch you out in a open bay can get you very wet or sink your arse very fast.

It can be done, as stated keeping carpets clean will be an ongoing battle.

Also just watch the SW and be sure to clean trailers and equipment after each use. At a min I would probably upgrade to a SW / TM.

Everything will rust eventually....and if he is buying used I don't know what type of trailer he may or may not be getting. But I always rinse off my trailer after it hits the SW...

I have a 15 foot cajun performance bass boat that I have used to fish in the surf and everywhere else. It's definitley not as nice as fishing a 22 foot pathfinder, but it can be done. You just have to pay very close attention to the weather and try to keep from throwing the fish down on the carpet. Also, wash the ever living hell out of EVERYTHING when you get home. Saltwater can damn near rust plastic.

It's possible, but on windy days you're going to be watching from the bank.

Fishing the marsh no problem and actually can be more advantageous to be able to get in the shallow water.

Fishing the islands and rigs I would only do when it is slick calm!

Hardly. I have a 19' bayboat that routinely spends time in less than a foot of water. Bass boats don't draft any less, and probably more. Those suckers are heavy.

As most said, the disadvantages are inability to take the waves/weather, not all fittings are stainless/saltwater resistant, and keeping the slime/scales off of the carpet. Another disadvantage...in my opinion...is that they aren't configured for that kind of fishing. But that's just my opinion. I like the open configuration of a center console bay boat.

Imagine yourself tied off to a platform in Lake Borgne in a bass boat when a storm pops up. I'll be in the bayboat fishing the next platform...and don't worry...I'll come help you out of the water and get you back to dry land. Then I'm gonna mark the spot on my GPS so I can fish that new structure on the bottom...

I fish a 24 ft bayboat and am terrified of skinny water lol.

I have seen bass boats and even 14ft bateaus fishing last island....6 mile run in open water.

What kind? And why?? I'm not talking about flying across duck ponds at 50+ mph...talking about trolling and poling while sightcasting for reds. There's a reason none of the redfish tour guys use bass boats. Some use the Ranger Intercoastal, but not because of its 'skinniness'. Ranger makes flats boats for skinny skinny water, but those take a soaking too in open bays.

Why on windy days you will have problems with bass boat? Bass boats usually do better in wind because of lower profile on water...

it's not the wind, it's the rough water the wind causes

24 ft Champion. Twin yamaha 150's.

The weight of the two 4 strokes just worries me when crossing some of the shallow bays in the winter.

It is my dads boat(makes me extra cautious since it isn't mine) which he allows me to use whenever I want. I wanted to buy the 21ft Cajun he had but he talked me out of it saying I could use the new boat whenever I wanted.
