Got to listen to Mainieri talking about the pitching staff today during AFR, he said that we have 8-9 guys that can consistently hit 90+ on the gun. My biggest concern (as was most peoples, i'd assume) was going to be our pitching staff. For me, this does a lot to alleviate some of that concern, still holding judgement until game situations of course.

Can anyone else remember a time in recent memory where we had that many pitchers who could throw it that hard? I know we've had seasons where our pitching staff was good and even great, but i'm not sure if I can ever remember a time where we had this many guys that can throw that hard.

ETA: Sorry if this is germans, I searched and didn't really find anything talking about this sound byte of media day specifically, and it was the one that stood out to me.

They better be able to find the zone.

Throwing above 90 is great and everything but high school kids can hit that. Speed isn't the most important thing in pitching. Matty Ott may very well be our best pitcher and rarely (if ever) hits 90. This staff is very unproven except for Ott, Bradshaw, and Alsup. But, I am looking forward to seeing what they can do because they sounds like they will do very well.

Yea, that's kinda what I was getting at here. I'm hoping they do well this year and surprise a lot of people. Gausman sounds like the real deal as a true freshman

The good thing about throwing with power...is that mistakes over the plate arent always mistakes. But if you dont have the MPH...mistakes will more than likely really be a mistake. Make sense?...

Yep, that makes sense, plus with the new bats even those over the plate that are mistakes will not be certain HRs (like they seemed to be last year ).

Eh, hitting 90 isn't that big a deal at this level. It's all about ball placement.

See post above about mistakes over the plate not necessarily being mistakes at that speed.

Which is why I said I'm holding judgement for now

Yes indeed. What is the name of the South Carolina pitcher they had who was a senior last year. He did not have the fastest pitches but threw some wicked curves on those balls. Watched him in the National Championship series against UCLA and it was pure artistry.

And what about Sidd Finch? How long did his career last?

Hopefully none of these guys went to the Nuke LaLoosh pitching camp in the offseason.

Thought the rule was either go before college or you are there for 3 years. I mean I'm not doubting your knowledge adam, but I thought the rule was three years (that's three years including this year

Yall think matty ott will go back to being a closer? I know he started a few games as a neccessity, but it seemed like it messed with his confidence a little. Was his best as a closer in 09

That is extremely rare to have that many guys throw in the 90's. I agree with other posters in that I hope they have command and are able to hit spots. College hitters are definitely good enough to make you pay for a mistake, no matter how hard you are throwing.

And mix up that heater with a changeup and a curveball or slider.
