Did he ever have to pay for drinks?

Easy, because Saban couldn't develop the talent and had no control over the player.

This thread is full of 5 star talent that were done in by booze and girls. Should we start a private all boys boarding school to house all of this talent from age 14 - 22? We'd probably win it all. Of course the plan could back fire and end up with a bunch of 5 star gay cheerleaders.

I thought he was noticeably slower after his knee injury in 2005 Peach Bowl.

That and he was running behind an NFL line that blew holes you could drive a truck through.
This, I could have gained yards with that line....

Watching highlights of the 03 SECCG game makes me realize HE WAS frickING SICK. How does someone go from so damn good, to as shitty as he was in one season. Seriously the runs he broke in that game were jaw dropping.

He never was that good to begin with. He was EXTREMELY hesitant to make a decision when approaching the line of scrimmage, which is why many called him tippy toes. This cost out offense tremendously. He was boom or bust in his running style. Too many 3-and-outs due to tis inconsistency. He had a great game against an over-rated Bama that many recall, who mis-schemed LSU. Give him some credit in that one though. Against OU in the 2003 NCgame, the safeties over-pursued and he had a huge whole to run through, so he did not tippy toe because with a hole that big there was no decision to be made. He got caught from behind, but still had enough speed to make a huge and memorable run that was a big part of the 2003 NC win. Give him credit for that run.
The thing about JV was he would have 2-3 carries that were really good, and then 10-15 that were for no gain, resulting in a poor overall running contribution to the offense.
Throw in his reported bar hanging and possible less-than-best efforts as a result of this bar hanging, and he was just not that good overall.
Folks want to talk about the notable and excellent exceptions when it comes to JV's performance in Purple and Gold, and that is fine, but most of this carries were very frustrating to watch.
