Can somebody explain to me what the different "techniques" are referring to defensive tackles? What is a 3 technique? How is it different from a 2 or a 4? I am clueless. Help me out.

No. a 3 tech plays inbetween the guard and tackle,

Number system goes like this.

lined up on:
center-0
between center and guard-1
head up on guard-2
between guard and tackle-3
on tackle-4
outside tackle(only in a 3-3 or 3-4 formations)-5 tech

I feel like a lot of people know that. If you played in high school or college you should know that.

Not a flame, btw.

I played the entire defensive line so I can tell you. The 3 technique tackle played on the guards left shoulder while the nose plays either on the should of the center, or the right shoulder of the guard. Which side of the ball they play on depends on the strength side of the offense. The strength side is wear the TE is lined up, or in case of no TE, where the RB is, or in case of an empty backfield, which side has the most WRs, and if there are equal WRs on both sides, line up on the side that the QB throws from (right hand or left hand).

Because he didn't know. It wasn't a stupid question by any means. But he was correct in saying he was ignorant.

It has to do with alignment.

And then there's 1 gap or 2 gap DTs...which is something else entirely

"0" = head up center "2" = head up guard "4" = head up tackle "6" = head up tight end. "1" = inside guard "3" = outside guard "4i" = inside tackle "5" = outside tackle "7" = inside TE "9" = outside TE. Is a bit confusing...many have changed the 1 tech to a shade on the center and calling the inside shade of the guard a "2i". Converting the 7 technique to a "6i" would be consistent with this

A lot of it also depends on a coach's preferences. Some like to used different names for techniques.

I think we(LSU) 2 gapped most the time, at least against spread teams. I hated playing LB in goal line situations and having to 2 gap and read the TE. fricking sucked
