louisiana has consistently packed baseball stadiums on the collegiate level. believe it or not, even ull is consistently in the top 25 in attendance.
so, could the state support a mlb team with attendance?
i find it hard to believe that we don't have a mlb team considering our passion for the game.
thoughts?

unfortunately probably not
unless they were kicking arse (see Hornets) and we'd probably have better attendance than the Rays

I bet our love for college sports would actually hinder our ability to support an MLB team as it would force largely the same demographic to choose and thereby weaken both.
I don't know all the economics though. There certainly are not packed houses on random Wednesday nights in June for teams not based in Boston, the Bronx, St. Louis, or the north side of Chicago.

Growing up in Hattiesburg, which is a hotbed of baseball talent and fans, I really think NO could do well with a mlb team.
I know there is alot that goes into it with logistics and whatnot. But I know that tons of people from MS would no doubt head down to NO for some baseball in the spring and summer months.
But good points are raised about the economics of it and I could see it struggling. Would be really fricking cool though.

I think we'd have the fans, but the corporate support/advertisers is what would kill us.
I don't think it is a possibility any time soon.

I think Louisiana would probably have trouble supporting a team, although I'd love it if one came. I did see on the news last night that Livingston was trying to ink a deal for a double A team to come in the next few years.

No, not with the current population levels in the region. There are more home games in baseball than in football and basketball combined, and already the numbers are against us to be able to support both of those sports.
Also, as another poster has already pointed out, having high attendance numbers for college sports could work against any professional team since there is only a limited amount of sports entertainment dollars to be spent for a given individual and people are already choosing to spend on the college product.
A third thing to consider is that the end of the baseball season coincides with the start of the NFL and college football seasons. End-of-year attendance for a baseball club located here would likely be atrocious.
So, anytime in the near future, the answer is most likely no.

81 home games in MLB is alot of games to get people to, especially if the team is not good.
LSU draws about 10.6k average. To get a MLB franchise, you'd have to be able to at least average 25-30k over 2x as many games.

Getting the financial support to get the payroll high enough to compete would be the challenge imo.

How did Tampa get a team?

Another thing to rant about, great. Too close to Houston and Texas, and everybody else is a fricking Braves fan.

So if you build a stadium beforehand You can skirt the attendance thing?

this is posted often, and the answer is clearly no. If we cant fill the Arena with only about 17k for 40 games, no way we fill an MLB stadium with 35-60k (estimate) for 80 or more games

Well, I know it's a pipe dream but I would love for us to get a MLB team.

quote:I'm not saying the attendance is a requirement, but Tampa Bay put alot of effort into getting a MLB team. Also, I believe they thought their attendance would be much more than it is. Tampa Bay and surrounding area also has about twice the population than New Orleans and the surrounding area.

Tampa Bay has the much more corporate sponsorship opportunities than New Orleans and Louisiana does, which I think is an even bigger obstacle to overcome.

No one, not even NYY or Boston, gets 60k in attendance. Top in MLB is 45k (NYY and Philly) with the bottom being about 17k (Oakland and Cleveland). LINK

If we had a MLB team I might actually care about the league.

I think Turner has the most seats at 51,000. The place looks like a ghost town with 33,000 in attendance because it is so big. They should have removed more seats after the Olympics. The small market teams are starting to build (or at least plan to build) 30,000-35,000 seat stadiums.

The Saints do fine with 8 games in the Superdome, the Hornets struggle at times in the NO Arena for 41 home games, can you imagine the attendance of a last place team in New Orleans for baseball?
