LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Stephen King's grand opus "The Stand" is finally getting the big-screen treatment.
Warner Bros. and CBS Films are teaming to adapt the novel, which in many ways set the bar for a generation of post-apocalyptic stories.
One of the biggest books of all time, "The Stand" is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters (such as the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail) and overlapping story lines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like Randall Flagg.

The studios and producers will sit down with writers and directors in the coming weeks in an attempt to find the right take on the material. One thing to be determined is whether to attempt the adaptation in one or multiple movies. King will be involved in some capacity.

Finally.

The Stand is one of my favorite books of all time. I have read it multiple times. The epic scale of the story would have to be multiple movies. It can not be done with one...at least not the way it deserves. Even though I love the Dark Tower, Wizards and Glass should be the only book in that series to be made into a movie. I think the Stand has a better chance at the box office and can be made into a great movie franchise allot easier than The Dark Tower...

Awesome! Wonder if King will have a cameo like he did the in the TV movie. This one could be killer. Great material. Like to get a 1st/1st of that book

What studio is doing the Dark Tower?
There needs to be some way to make Randall Flagg the same actor in the Stand and The Dark Tower.

Great, another remake of something that was done less than 20 years ago.
It's going to be difficult to improve on the original mini-series, and there's no way they can do it with one movie. The mini-series was 8 hours, and I don't think it covered everything from the book.

Technically call it a remake. It is 2 different mediums.
To be honest, a movie version of The Stand would be nice. It's mroe to the point.

Another movie where 6/10s of the book will need to be left out to make a 2 hour movie.
I just don't see this or It ever making any sense out of the books in 2 hours.

I tend to agree with this. This will be the kind of movie that will be a lot better if one never read the book.

I think they'll end up doing 2 or 3 movies with it. Not only because of the story, but because it'll allow them to milk it at the box office.

Great book, but I think its too big for a movie to do it justice.
It might work as a 10-12 part HBO/Showtime series that could get to everything in the book, but not have the same restrictions as network TV.

Would prefer the miniseries remade. Don't know how they can pull this off.

This. The miniseries was surprisingly solid for a network presentation and was only done 16-17 years ago (damn that makes me feel old). Even with the good job they did they had to leave out a lot of stuff especially character development from the beginning of the series. Miniseries had a run time of over 6 hours (366 minutes presented over 8 hours of network broadcast) so I don't see how they'll be able to do this without at least a trilogy.

I agree.

I almost would rather AMC remake the miniseries than for them to put out a watered down movie version.
