I consider a handgun, a conceal item and a backup/sidearm item. Its usually not my preferred. That's just me though.

I think in a HD scenario, the closest gun us the preferred one. I would rather have a .22 in my hand than an saiga 12 with a drum mag locked up in a safe when someone kicks down my door. I think that goes alot to situational awareness and being prepared mentally as well as prepared with respect to firearms and training.
