True. But the sports that do use series, they let way too many teams (NBA, MLB) in. They play 162 and 82 games respectively but still let a shitload of teams in the playoffs.

In regards to the MLB, the more games you play, the more likely you are to distill the total of 8 (same as the NFL - not too many) best teams to make the playoffs. MLB, by far, has the best system for crowning the champ.
