Hopefully it happens some way. I just think with a two-team championship, although the right two teams may get in according to formula, there are too many uneven variables (mainly conference and schedule strength, home/away schedule) to be able to say that #2 is better than #3. Just let them play it off.

If you aren't in the top 4, tough luck.

4 wouldn't include too many unworthy teams...not enough to be disruptive (or teams who have decent resumes)

and with 4, you have 3 neutral-field games every year, and fans only have to travel to 2 games max

that eliminates the revenue gap between teams given another home game (or possibly 2 with a 16-team playoff)

the problem is how you slice up the mega money a playoff will make. it will break the back of CFB
