Going to Memphis for the weekend for a change of scenery. I've heard of some of the famous BBQ joints like BB King's, but does anyone have some other suggestions on the best BBQ restaurants there?

this is a very good list. Central and BBQ Shop are the two overall frontrunners - personally, I think BBQ Shop is the best. I'm not a big fan of corky's. Rendezvous is so mass produced that it is hit and miss - sometimes the ribs are great, sometimes they're shite (dry; no meat). The sausage cheese plate as well as the michelob pitchers at Rendezvous are always money and the ambiance is great, but there is much, much better BBQ to be had in Memphis.

oh, and the commissary is good too, but it's in an entirely different part of town. If you're out east or in the burbs, the commissary is a good option. All the other good joints are in midtown and downtown.
Also, BB Kings is NOT a place to get BBQ. If you have to get BBQ on Beale Street, Blues City is serviceable, but certainly would not be in my top 10 in the city.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'll be going to BBQ Shop.

When I went to Memphis, I thought BB King was the best out of all of them.
Rendezvous is nothing but dry ribs with some type of chilli powder sprinkled on them and I wasn't that impressed. And the famous "sausage and cheese plate" is nothing but a bunch of pieces of sausage cut up with cubes of cheese.
I don't know, I always heard such great things about the bbq but overall Memphis didn't really knock my socks off.

Central is really good. Rendezvous is mostly atmosphere, with a good sausage and cheese plate. Interstate is also a good place. Corky's is ok at best, just like Tops. Commissary is good, but I've only had it catered, so I'm not much help. Do yourself a favor it you want BBQ and drive down to Abe's in Clarksdale...

Ate it on Wednesday on the way to the Burks Doe-A-Ggedon this weekend. Abe's was great.

Abe's is great. I don't care much for Interstate.

How was your hunt? I don't even have to ask about Abe's, I know exactly how it was

I can't imagine why. Maybe it's because you hit the wrong spots?

It's funny how those things go.
I was similarly underwhelmed by Sammy's famous fried cheese (while at the same time I really enjoy Sammy's)
