What kind of food do you like? What area of town?

i could go for some mexican or a bar and grille. just looking for something besides a chain restaurant. gonna be down around Hoover/Meadowbrook/Cahaba Heights.

Great. Go to Brookwood Mall. There's a really good mexican restaurant there called Cocina Superior. They make their own chips & the salsa is really good, too. I think it's possible the best mexican restaurant in town. It's not actually in the mall. Just free standing directly in front of it (they've tried to make it like an "open air" mall environment. Good luck. I hope you enjoy.

Cocina Superior
excellent frozen mojitos
ETA: There is a Zea right there as well
ETA: to me, that's Homewood, not "Hoover/Meadowbrook/Cahaba Heights"

As you are seeing, you have tons of good choices to pick from.
Last time I was there, the locals drug me over to the Iguana Grill off Lorna Rd. Enjoyed the food, enjoyed the fascinating decorations inside even more. Antoni Gaudi meets "we can make a light out of this?"

Rojo is the bomb, though it's a little more closer to downtown than you are wanting
Sol Azteca is a good, typical cheap Messican joint around those area though.
Or Chuys at the summit, but that may be too chainy for you

went to Cocina Superior. Solid joint. chips and salsa were really good. Fish tacos were mediocre.

I'm sorry to hear the fish tacos were mediocre. Actually, theirs are the best I've had in Birmingham. My favorites are at Baja Fresh - but there isn't one in Birmingham. I truly hope you weren't disappointed with the choice. I really like the place.

well they were by no means terrible. i'm just a snob when it comes to fish tacos. chips and salsa were excellent, my stepdad's crab enchilada's were really good and their chargrilled oysters were way better than i expected from a place in central Alabama. i appreciate the recommendation.
