After reading the other "dog" thread on this board, I would make sure to keep it on a leash and that it knew how to speak English - just in case it walked into one of these guys' area during a deer hunt.

That would be almost a 100% dead dog. If a dog walked out on me and started speaking perfect English then I'm shooting it on sight. No questions asked.

I wish I had a good squirrel dog. I was reintroduced to hunting squirrel with a dog last year and I can't wait to get started after deer season this year. You can learn so much about your area by following that dog.

If you plan on buying a trained dog, be prepared to spend $$$$$ depends on bloodlines and who you get it from. Mountain curs are good squirrel dogs and there are many people that breed them.

I know a lot of people who hunt with dogs and love it. A first cousin of mine asked me several times but I told him, for me, the "stalking" etc. is what's fun for me. I used to kill 80 or so a year but wouldn't hunt during duck season. I killed my first squirrel with a dog and hunted once more with one.
Too much hurry hurry, pulling vines, shooting on the run for me. One thing I did like is that you can "visit" with friends while you hunt, similar to duck hunting.
