SPOILER

I was left wondering if the movie intended for us to believe that James had grown so tired of the mental illness, insomnia, paranoia, etc. that he purposely took his guns off and stood up on the chair to give Ford his shot, or if he really didn't realize what was about to happen until he saw the reflection in the picture.

I think it was pretty clear that James wanted Ford to kill him, otherwise he'd have never talked to Ford again after the "you want to be me" quote.

eta: it absolutely stuns me to know this movie lost money. I have to attribute it to marketing, because it's a brilliant movie that I only heard of because of the great folks on the movie/tv board.

It surprises me that it gets so much love on this board. It's very Malick-esque....a director that isn't very popular on here.

From the "you want to be me" scene or just at the end?
