1966 Cotton Bowl - Arkansas vs. LSU

Unranked LSU (7-3-0) sprang one of the Classic’s biggest upsets, downing No. 2 Arkansas, 14-7, and ended college football’s longest winning streak at 22. The Hogs (10-0-0) last defeat came by the same score, on the same Cotton Bowl turf, to SMU in the ninth game of 1963. That also was the last time the Hogs had been blanked in the final two quarters until the Bengals turned the trick today.
Pictures from the game and full story
This was a terrible loss for Arkansas. LSU spoiled our chance at back-to-back National Championships breaking a 22 game winning streak. The positive effect on Arkansas program would have been huge.
It was an unbelievable game by LSU. They simple willed the win, and Arkansas was flat-footed. It is a great game, if you have the opportunity to watch the highlights I would suggest it.

As the story goes, Mac was bringing the team in to the hotel and some Hog fans said "Hey, look they actually showed up".
Mac said he didn't have to say a thing after that to get the team ready.

Thanks. I couldn't remember if it was 21 or 22, but it was quoted right above.

In the game story, the only Arky TD drive was an 11-play 87 yard drive and only took 1:27 off the clock? What did they go out of bounds every play?

Funny how the world works. I recently came across a program my grandfather had from that game. My boss played for the Tigers and was pictured and listed in the starters section. Led to some pretty good stories from him.

Yep. The pig fans spent so much time laughing at the Tiger faithful in Dallas before the game asking why they even came to see their team get beat. Then the win by the Tigers shut up the piggies.
It was one of my Dad's favorite LSU wins and he loved to mention it to pig fans.

I remember reading that when LSU stopped cold an Arky run up the middle on the first play of the game, Mac said to himself, "We're gonna be OK."
or words to that effect

Oh, and QB Pat Screen with 10 passes all day. That was Cholly Mac football!

Charlie Mac really seemed like a good guy. I know people that knew him personally and they really liked him. Of course, I do need to mention that he was born in Arkansas. :)

An incredible effort by a clearly out-manned LSU team. They showed so much heart - and Cholly Mac showed Frank Broyles how to prepare a team and coach for victory.

One thing that I have not seen mentioned is that LSU knocked the Ark. starting QB out of the game in the 1st half I think; however, great win by the Tigers under any circumstances.

Not quite. I had a brother that was only 3 years younger than you.

Broyles never got the bitter taste out of his mouth either. In his later days as an ABC analyst with Keith Jackson he rarely was positive in his comments towards the Tigers.
Oh yeah, Brittenum to Crockett was a great tandem. Th.IDE guys kicked arse.

I may be wrong, but I don't remember Brittenum getting knocked out of that game. I remember either Screen or Stokely getting knocked out for LSU. Long time ago, but one of the greatest LSU wins of all time.

Oh yeah, still mad at Doug Moreau for missing a chip shot field goal that would have iced the game.

So good to hear that I'm not the only one that remains pissed over some bad plays that happened years ago, even in wins or defeats.

You are right. Broyles never did recover from this game. I would say that this loss was worse than the Game of the Century (1969 #1 Texas @ #2 Arkansas game). Both were extremely tough losses. Broyles could have had 3 NCs in 6 year span. LSU cost us one and Texas took the other. He had Texas down 14-0 and choked. And he should have never lost to LSU with the talent he had on the field. LSU came in and played hard and rammed the football down the field.
