How many really good single player RPGS come out now? Seems like they are either crap or the good ones are being developed as mmorpgs . Everyone seems to want a piece of the monthly subscription money.

There are some rumors that the next elder scrolls will be a mmorpg which will piss me off to no end since they are about the only company that puts our solid RPGs.

What say you?

Yes Dragon Age was good and we have a new one coming out next year and a new Dungeon Siege. Diablo will probably come out some time in the next 30 years.

Still seems like slim pickings for RPGs.

It seems like Bethesda is the only company that makes quality single player RPGs anymore.

Follow the money.....Last 2 COD games should be a pretty solid barometer of what the gaming trend is. Console games , which are pretty much the gaming system of choice, dont support MMORP games. Sorry

Demon Souls on the PS3 was awesome. If you have a PS3, I wouldn't hesitate to get it. It got an 89 on metacritic and it is the best RPG PS3 exclusive.

Of course shooters are the most popular genre, but if EA makes a WoW type game on console, I could see it being popular.

Personally I prefer single player RPG's to MMO's.

I played WoW for 3 years, and loved it at first. But once got into a high end guild doing high end game content it became too much of a job. If you didn't have 4 hours to devote at one time it wasn't even worth logging in. frick that.

I enjoy single player RPG's because of the flexibility of being able to come and go on my own time and not having to rely on other players to get through content.

In the end though I'll take a good FPS over a RPG. I was brought up on Wolfenstein and Doom. FPS's feel like home.

It's about the same balance of good and crap as it has always been. The only problem is that we're tired of Japan for the most part (aside from Atlus). They and Bioware put out consistently great titles.

Not really. Bethesda as a whole is an above average developer that has always made just as many shitty games as immersive free roam adventures. And they rely heavily on a modding community.

Our standards have risen since the 16-bit era and we tend to shun the same simplicity and fantasy stereotypes that we would have latched onto before. The RPG market is still incredibly saturated, largely because of Japan, but it seems that we westerners have grown distant from them.

Maybe 2010 has you down, being such a terrible year for gaming all-around, but 2011 has a lot of potentially great titles that will make up for it.

After Morrowind and Oblivion I was looking for something similar and got into Gothic and Gothic II which are both good and cheap these days. Not as much detail as Morrowind/Oblivion but I thought they were surprisingly good. Gothic III and IV supposedly are terrible which is too bad.

The Nintendo DS is actually a solid RPG system. The newest Dragon Warrior came out for it and they have done remakes of the early Final Fantasy games.
