Bioware and Bethesda are still doing great work with RPGS. Borderlands was a quasi-RPG of sorts. Diablo meets FPS. I hope that RPGs aren't going anywhere. They are a nice change of pace from the highly competitive FPS fare. I like relaxing and enjoying a cool story when I don't feel like pwning n00bs.

I'd try out Diablo III if I was rocking something a little better than a barebones laptop. I think I'm actually dodging a bullet on that one though, Diablo II was like heroin for me.

That is what I loved about Elder Scrolls. The massive open ended aspect.

I'm not a huge fan of linear RPG. I got sick of it growing up with Final Fantasy. Great games but after about 8 of them, I finally tossed in the towel.

I also tend to like to make god powered characters and I kill everything and grind things out until I am invincible.

I hated the limited amount of gold in Dragon Age. I played it through a few times, but I always end up picking the noble dwarf so I can get the gold bonus. They essentially force you to be a dwarf if you want to be able to buy the best items for everyone. Hope they change that and have a lot more random attacks to get more XP and gold.

What an awesome game. Definitely blurred the lines between FPS and RPG

There HAS to be a way to introduce more random events, ambushes, random dungeons, etc, into these games. I can't stand being locked into their storyline.

Ugh.. I hate storyline games. Mass Effect was the only good one because you chose how it played out.

I was completley disappointed in FF13, the characters sucked, no side quests, and you can't choose who is in your party?

I have a game recommendation for the Xbox 360 if you are like me and loved those old JRPGs from the past. Lost Odyssey. It was written and produced by Hironobu Sagaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series. The musical score was written by Nobuo Uematsu, who was the music composer of FF1-FF9. Its a lot of fun. 4 discs

J-RPGs have been sucking arse for a little while now.

I just couldn't get over the cheesy characters/dialogue in FF13. Maybe it just didn't seem so bad before they started doing voice acting, but I can't recall old school Final Fantasy games being that cheesetastic.

I don't really consider FF13 an RPG. You basically run through tubes the entire game. Zero exploration

I could get over the linear plot if it wasn't for the god awful story/characters. I didn't give a shite about the events unfolding around me and the characters were just annoying. the battle system was interesting for a bit until I realized it was just button mashing for the most part.

And a lot of RPGs provide only an illusion of open-endedness. The difficulty level of the monsters/enemies and the accessibility of certain areas funnel you to the places where you are supposed to be.

I just want another KOTOR that's not this MMORPG or whatever it's called crap. Give me another good storyline and a jedi to customize.

Well Final Fantasy X and XII had open environments, exploration, variety, side quests, characters who weren't completey bland and uninteresting, decent stories, and fun battle systems. FF13 has none of those

I want to get back into FF13 (and just skip the cutscenes) but the battle system sucks, you're right its just button mashing.

Not going to happen. Lucas wants you to pay him monthly.

My biggest complaint about MMORPG's are the requirements to raid to experience all of the content. I just don't have the time to level a character and join raids. I like how MMO's play but not the overall experience.

I have FF13 and still not finished with it. FF used to be my favorite games but each one gets worse. I feel like I am watching a movie with a little gameplay here and there.

MMORPGS are terrible because they force you to do about 10,000 times the amount of grinding than you do on a normal RPG. Heck maybe 100,000 Cubed.

That is of course to keep you coming back for years on end.

I don't hate MMORPGs but I do hate that the best companies in the RPG genre are now dumping single player for MMORPG.

I just pray that the rumor that the next elder scrolls will be mmorpg is false. If you can play online or single player, then I won't mind but I doubt they do that.

Good point. Most of us don't have the time for that crap. A day when I can veg out and just play video games all day is a special day for me.

Mindless, thoughtless shooter games are what is becoming popular. RPGs simply require too much thought and too much patience to play. I haven't played Dragon Age, not big on those dungeons and dragons type games, but Fallout 3 was one of the best games I've played and I am very much looking forward to New Vegas. You're right though, lots of RPG seems to be dying out.

Condescending pricks also turn people off of them. Honestly, what did it for me is most RPGs are about things I couldn't pretend to care about. My favorite was always Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario to a lesser extent. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallout 3 because lets face it, who doesn't want to kill some crazy arse post apocalypse zombies.

How many really good single player RPGS come out now?

It's about the same balance of good and crap as it has always been. The only problem is that we're tired of Japan for the most part (aside from Atlus). They and Bioware put out consistently great titles.

There are some rumors that the next elder scrolls will be a mmorpg which will piss me off to no end since they are about the only company that puts our solid RPGs.

Not really. Bethesda as a whole is an above average developer that has always made just as many shitty games as immersive free roam adventures. And they rely heavily on a modding community.

Still seems like slim pickings for RPGs.

Our standards have risen since the 16-bit era and we tend to shun the same simplicity and fantasy stereotypes that we would have latched onto before. The RPG market is still incredibly saturated, largely because of Japan, but it seems that we westerners have grown distant from them.

Maybe 2010 has you down, being such a terrible year for gaming all-around, but 2011 has a lot of potentially great titles that will make up for it.

I didn't say all of their games were good but they put out The Elder Scrolls series which has been one of the best in my lifetime.

I disagree and my point is that some of the companies that USED to put out quality single player RPGs appear to be moving to the MMORPG model.

As already mentioned KOTOR III was canceled for a MMORPG and Elder Scrolls may be a MMORPG.

Now, there may still be plenty of Japanese RPGs but I can't stand their linear emo nature anymore.

Oh god... what a great game... but there were times when i considered ejecting the disc and cracking it with my bare hands
