They didn't lose the site registration. A WHOIS search brings up that it is registered until 2015, it's prob them switching to a new server or such. So no, the guy who said he bought it was an idiot.

While it does seem unlikely that they would lose it, it does seem odd that the WHOIS contact is in Mexico.....
