Matheiu has literally come out of know where. I follow recruiting to a decent extent and I had no idea who this #14 was that seemed to be everywhere against UNC.

So I have to go with TM.

This, after seeing him the first game, I said the kid should never leave the field when the defense is playing. Oh, an Special Teams. After the first game in ATL, I said the kid would play on Sundays.

wow, really? I don't consider myself to be a big recruiting guy (mainly visit the Recruiting Board every now and then), but there was a decent amt of buzz about him from the time he started blowing up at camps in summer 09. then Rivals named him their #1 coverage CB in the country. and there was a ton of buzz about him from fall camp.

didn't expect him to be the little ball of terror he is though. love the way he plays.

I love the way that TM has been used this season, and am extremely impressed with his skills...but at 5'9" is anyone concerned about his size to play CB (esp. at the next level)?

Sure, you can't play CB in the NFL at 5'9".

Signed,

Chris Owens, Antoine Winfield, Terrence McGee, Brandon Flowers and a few more.

Check to see how many Safeties are playing in the NFL at 5'8".
You can play football or you can't. Height, weight, speed, etc. don't care.......can he play, hell yea.......

Rivals has him at #13 and a four star. That's good of course, but we brought in a lot of guys like that. None have done what he has as a frosh.

I don't recall the buzz around him in 09, but I could have missed it. FWIW, he got offers from us and Tennessee. Other than that, its C-USA, Sun Belt and FCS teams.

TM makes more plays. Spectacular plays.

PP doesn't really get the chance to shine like that because teams just don't challenge him but once or twice a game.

Highlight film = TM more impressive as a freshman.

Better DB play = PP more impressive as a freshman.

PP7 is usually covering the other teams best receiver so how much does TM benefit from PP7's presence? We'll see how good he really is next year without PP7 and he matched up with top receivers.

In this case there is around 35 exceptions to the rule. Around 35 guys in the NFL playing DB at 5'9" or less.

Like I said, you can play or you can't. TM can play.

I really don't recall PP being a shutdown corner as a freshman. I thought he did well, but I would not describe it as really awesome. Tyrann's has made more big plays than any freshman in LSU history. I am not just talking about a bunch of tackles either. I am talking clutch plays like stripping balls and recovering your own strip. That's just for starters. Just a ridiculous amount of huge plays.

The real comparison is Mathieu in 2010 to Landry in 2003. I know they played different positions, but their style of play as true freshmen stands out as being different than any other Tigers. No LSU players I've ever watched blitzed with greater instant acceleration than those two. They are the very embodiment of the term "game speed."
