When does it officially start in NW Louisiana? I killed a 180 lbs 6 point the other night, its neck was swole and smelled like it had been spraying itself.

I know in northeast la, they are usually in full rut by late December. A good cold front can push it up sometimes. But northwest la is usually earlier and I wouldn't be surprised to find some of them starting to come in. It's crazy the difference from region to region.

Agreed about the region making a difference, I hunt in central AL and out deer typically rut in late Jan while a buddy about 50 miles NW have their rut around Christmas/New Years week.

Christmas/New Years week

This is when I've seen the most rut activity in the areas I hunt in NELA, consistently through the years.

But south Arkansas, I know it can be as early as thanksgiving.

Generally begin seeing a seeking phase (young bucks) around the 1st week of November through the 3rd week. (Killed a buck trailing on the 7th this month).
Generally by the 17th, begin to see chasing (young bucks again). (Haven't seen any chasing yet, but haven't got to hunt much this year)
Generally from thanksgiving though the 1st week of December the big boys are up and running. (The 3 biggest bucks on my wall have been killed from the 28th through the 5th.)

This is in Webster Parish, a friend of mine has two 140's, both killed on the 2nd of December.

I've heard reports that they are in full rut around Pleasant Hill. Where we hunt in Mansfield the bucks are chasing but not in full rut yet. The does are not accepting and the glands aren't swollen yet.

4X4 Demon...You say that you hunt in Mansfield. So do I, however I am in school at LSU during the week. Would you mind posting when signs of the full rut begin to show in that area? We have killed a good amount of bucks so far this season, but only one had wet tarsal glands...no swollen necks yet. And out of those bucks only one was real mature, the rest being around 2.5 years.

I hope I am not making a mistake and skipping this weekend, but I will be there Thanksgiving day and the following weekend. But if signs begin to show early next week I believe I'd be able to leave on a moments notice. Keep me posted! Thanks.

That's the second rut for us (Winn & Jackson Parish). The first and best rut is always around Thanksgiving. Always killed the majority of my bucks then or right around New Years (during the 2nd rut).

We're right near the water tower on hwy 175. The lignite mine used to be on our back lease, but has moved since then (That crane is massive). However, the natural gas mines are taking over our lease, such an eyesore.

My thoughts are that the cold snap around Thanksgiving will kick them into full rut mode. Supposed to drop a good 20 degrees between Tuesday and Thursday, and then another 10 or so degrees Thursday night. Should be interesting.

deer rut at pretty much the exact same time every single year. people that say there is an "early" rut this year really dont know what they are talking about. Now the weather may affect the amount of rut activity you see.

For example... Traditionally december 15 has always been the "peak" rut activity for your area. So say on december 15 this year its 80 degrees, you probably will not see a lot of daytime rut activity. Now next year on december 15 its 40 degrees, you will see rutting activity because deer move more in colder weather, not because the colder weather made the rut start.

Well the past 7 or so years the rut has always been the first weekend of November at my place. This year it is predicted to be during Thanksgiving...that last weekend of November. I know there are a lot of different factors that contribute to the rut but the main trend has been the photoperiod (difference in length of day light). The shorter days causes them to release certain hormones that get their juices flowing (I won't go into the science behind it but that is basically what happens).

The rut is also perfectly timed by the does so that their offspring have the highest chance of survival (born during the spring when there is plenty of vegetation to eat and warm weather). Ive read of deer in the Mississippi Delta area adapting there birth times to after May or June to avoid flooding of the delta. Also deer in the desert have their offspring during the wettest time of the year.

All in all, there is no exact explanation for it, but it always takes place some time around when the time changes (shorter days). Bottom line is that it is all relative to your hunting area, and yes it usually falls on or around the same time every year but I was just curious as to why this year is different than the past several years.

Like I said...it is relative to your hunting area. Maybe it is the same at your place this year but ours hasn't happened yet.

its pretty much the same exact dates everywhere. it may change by a few days, but not by 2 or 3 weeks. Your deer are rutting whether you see it or not

Wow, where do you hunt? I hunt in NW MS and the earliest it will happen is around Thanksgiving. The pre-rut can look a lot like the actual rut...
