The specific approach is to bold-faced lie and say whatever the frick you need to to get the job.

Am I alone in feeling that Lynx is one braggadocious bastard? I feel like I haven't seen him post anything that isn't related to his number of job interviews and subsequent job offers in months. "Look at me" type posting IMO, this may require a post review...

I'd say more of a skewed truth is the approach I would take.
The year I graduated, E&Y Houston pulled 5 or 6 of us from LSU in Assurance and offered 2.
Be confident in your lies and relax They have to work w/ your dumbass. They know you have almost no clue what you're getting yourself in to and less about the real word work. So they're looking for somebody who is articulate, easy to talk to, and smarter than average.

Good luck

Come on...I mean don't you remember when you were graduating and excited about entering the "real world"? It's kind of all you think about for a little while. I think it's spilling over in to his posts, but hell that's his life right now. He does have recent first hand knowledge of the OP question. He won't be bragging long though in a couple of months if he takes that E&Y job as he's working his 70 hours a week talking about FML I hope this is worth it.

just remember to be likable and interesting. if you aren't likable or interesting, fake it or just lie

those traits matter more than almost anything once the interview actually begins

Yes, but you don't have to accept doing what they call "channel 1" (audit) assignments...they will ask you if you are ok with it prior to putting you on that engagement.

But yes, I understand where you are going with that...

Well hopefully they're not feeding you BS when they say that. Because if they absolutely need the staff they WILL stick you on an audit engagement.

To the OP - just sound intelligent and confident, and ask the right questions. Ask the interviewing managers and partners about the industries they work with and what they enjoy about their work, and try to relate that to yourself and your own interests. I know that's very generic advice, but it's a good sign that they've invited you in for an office visit.

Congratulations, you've made the cut from an education and grade point perspective. The office visit/interview is all about seeing if your personality meshes with your potential officemates, and if you will be able to interact effectively with your co-workers and clients.

Be yourself. Tell them you are looking for whatever experience you can gain because you are not sure what career path you want to pursue in public accounting. You will not be the first candidate they have interviewed. They will be able to sniff out bullshite. They will understand when an intern candidate doesn't have all things figured out. You have to make them comfortable with you so they will not worry about your relationships with your co-workers and/or clients.

Ask questions about the process of being an intern at E&Y. Will you be assigned a mentor during your internship, and if so what will be their role in assisting you get assigned to a variety of engagements? What sort of engagements are typical for an intern? How many partners, managers, etc. will you be exposed to? Does E&Y have teams that specialize in certain industries and how does one get selected or assigned to those teams? Focus on E&Y and how you will fit in the organization.

Good luck.

Yeah this firm told me that too because I explicitly told them I didn't want to be an auditor. I have 0 expectation that they will actually hold to that come mid-Feb.

I worked for those folks when it was just E & E and if you didn't get 50 billable hours a week you were in trouble. Expect a 60 to 70 hour work week.

At the big firms everyone is available for audit jobs. I was tax and would get shipped out of town to be a body on audits where they were a little short handed. But it is good experience and you will learn a great deal in a short time, meet lots of clients and get a lot of chances to move to a good industry job if you want to leave.

Just got back from the office visit... whole process was pretty informal, went to dinner the night before, had 2 behaviorals, 1 case study, and 1 writing sample (which is pretty new i hear). Should hear back from them sometime next week
