That sucks! It doesn't seem fair he beat cancer once only to have a different kind attack him. Is he going through chemo for the leukemia?
I had a fried get leukemia and she was in remission for 7 years. Then it came back and she passed away three weeks ago only 5 months after being diagnosed again. The leukemia was under control but she developed pneumonia and she couldn't fight it off because her immune system was so beaten down from the latest chemo.

No, he is 80 YO and really doesn't have any upside. The doctor caught it last year and the oncologist diagnosed it as chronic leukemia which people that have it can still have relatively long life span. His latest scan showed clean colon but the leukemia had changed and become much more aggressive. He has been treated for schizophrenia as well and the drugs improved that remarkably, but the side effects made him disinterested in most activities. He would tell you he has had a good life, is at peace with his choice, and is thankful he never had to be institutionalized.
That's why I was bitching about LTC insurance on another thread a few weeks ago, $219/month for 10+ years and it would not even pay for an at home sitter which is much cheaper than a nursing home. LTC is such a crap shoot it is impossible to project accurately whether someone needs it, all or none. The nursing home admin we spoke with for a fall back was ranting about the new health care changes and what it is doing to them, she was not happy at all regarding new policies and burdensome new paper work.
