What do you folks in Walker think needs to be done with their sports. They have had good coaches and do now in football, but they have not won a district game since about 2004 and they haven't been close. Are kids apathetic? Are the best athletes not playing? ??

Unfortunately, nobody out here really cares about Walker. Even the people who are LP lifers. Denham carries the torch for LP!

I don't know if this is racist or not, but in last seasons LP News football preview I only counted literally a handful of Americans of African descent in the whole parish while looking at the team pictures.
This lack of athleticism is probably the answer.

Definitely a lack of athleticism and size for one. Central looked like they were running half speed against them last week.

i kind of hate to bump this thread because i know the athletics suck out here at the high school level. however, i was at my youngest boys football game this morning and learned that several changes are being talked about.
from my understanding the football and baseball coach are on shaky ground. the school and parents want better and these coaches are not providing it.

Wrong.... Central has two African American kids starting on Defense and one on Offense sooo that is not it..

walker's problem is coaching, plain and simple.
contrary to popular belief, there are several talented kids here. the football and baseball here definately could be better with the kids they have.

I think the number one problem is... there are probably wonderful athletes walking the halls of the school but have no desire to play for a team that is the laughing stock of the state... Until the program itself tries to revamp the mindset... these kids will continue to not come out for the team... I played against walker back in the Toddrick Chris Hawkins days... they were a formidable foe but those two were it...
1. Change the mindset of the program...
2. This will bring the athletes that have no desire to play out to the field
3. Stop scheduling the same non district teams year in and year out... Play a Lutcher, a Barbe, play a power.. yeah you might get beat but at least ur not playing the same ole Morgan City team

This is what nettles did and continues to do at Denham.
Getting us feeder middle school coaches involved and allowing us and our teams to all of the high school's facilities.
Inviting our kids to come to his camps at discounted rates. Providing cleats, and other equipment for the less privilidged kids who may not be able to afford it.
Offering us full access to practices and his playbook so we may sync up terminology as well as offering us access to sidelines during varsity games to see how they manage games.
Even went so far as to ask us as middle school coaches if we had any ideas on getting kids interested in the program, and getting kids we coached to play football and not just basketball or baseball.
He allows the peewee league teams on the field in the end zones during varsity games. He sticks around on Saturdays after film to watch some of the peewee league games and talk to kids and parents.
He goes to as many of the feeder middle school games that he can, and makes sure our kids know him and he knows our kids by name. He even traveled to one of our away games and watched the whole game from the end zone.
And he had gotten the community excited about football again

it used to not be like that. sad they acted like thugs.
i do know this, if todd is here next year it will be even worse of a season. kids DO NOT want to play for him. i dont even think his son, quarterback, wants to play for dad.

This is really sad. The problem is that Walker is in the middle of nowhere and the PARENTS DON'T care. They just don't.

this!!!!!
i have talked about getting middle schools and elementary schools involved. my youngest son plays for renegade C team. these kids grow up together out here. start running an offense at a young age and progress from there. get these kids excited about sports and growing up together.

most do, but a lot dont. i see that.
several times i have seen parents leaving practice with their child having to pick up a child who was having to walk home because their parent(s) were no where to be found.

Im willing to bet its more than just lack of coaching... Mahfouz was my head coach back at central for one year.. and while we didnt make the playoff i thought him to be a decent coach.... hes definitely an offensive guru... granted we had an All State receiver. future all state receiver, and a 2nd round MLB draft pick pitcher for a QB... This leads me to believe the quality of athletes are not on the team... But I refuse to believe that at a 5A school there are not a couple of people that can play pitch and catch...

ok, he is not the coach at walker. what is your point?
Posted on 10/30/10 at 3:42 pm to MsandLa
He was on the coaching staff at some point in the past couple years correct?
He had a pretty good offensive gameplan.. but obviously no one to run it for him...

i see your point but his arse also got run off from central due to losing. right or wrong?
i am telling you there is talent in this area. young talent on the youth program teams, i see it every saturday. i have also noticed the older they get, the worse the coaching becomes.
