single shot with a red dot scope on it. He hunted with it last year and blasted at a doe but missed. That was the first time he had shot anything that powerful. Now a year later he is scared of it. Im thinging of going with a single shot rifle and scope this year, what should i get?

So you gave a 6 yo a 410 ???

The best way to get him unafraid of it is to take him out and let him shoot it more. Let him blast cans and bottles with it. On the rifle side, H&R makes a great single shot. Academy usually has a great price on it and usually has a combo rifle and scope. .243 or 7mm08 would be good calibers for him. Single shots by nature are gonna kick like crazy. However, the H&R is heavy enough to absorb some of it.

and let him shoot it at a deer??? What did that deer do to you? Must have been bad.

That's unethical and likely to be illegal.

I got a .410 single barrel when I was 8. I was taught gun safety, respect for wildlife, how to read sign and how to stay on a stand.
It was the way it was done in the day.

8 and 6, big diffrence, I have no problem with teaching kids about guns and I highly support it, but a 6 yo with a 410, and now he is scared of it, take the kid with you let them see how things are done and let them work themselves into shooting

Many stories of 410 killing deer. I got my first 410 at 5 and killed my first duck with it that year. It was on the water but hell I was five.

Rossi makes a single shot combo you should look into.
Some come with 3 differnet barrels some with just 2 barrels, Academy usually has a few to choose from.

Not when you consider that many of those single shots are VERY light, especially with the composite stocks. Less weight in the gun = more felt recoil

Bought my son a H&R 7mm-08 from Academy and we can't get it to group well past 50 yards. Shooting from a vice and have tried 3 different brands of ammo. Several of my friends have bought these for their kids and have had no problems. I guess we just got a lemon.
Gotta give H&R credit though...I called them and they said to send it back and they will replace it.

Thanks Reveille, yea the single shots I've dealt with are substantially lighter than a bolt action.

For the posters who don't understand, he has been sitting in the woods in a stand with me starting at age 3. He knows and understands gun saftey probaly better than most adults. I would never let him hunt without me in the stand. Last year i bought him a rossi 410 and 22 combo for christmas, which he shot one time (at the doe) and is now scared to shoot it again. This is bringing the question to mind about a rifle. I was thinking a low caliber youth model might be better for him at this age. Thanks to the posters who had some legit info.

I just can't see him being less afraid of a rifle than a shotgun. Even if the kick is less the muzzle blast and noise will be exponentially more than that .410 and a .243 will kick more than a .410 IMO. My first gun was a remington pump .410 when I was 8 and killed my first deer with it at 9. He will shoot it again when he is ready. If you are going to go the rifle route I would get a .223 with a heavy target barrel. The weight will make the gun have virtually no recoil. Still going to be really loud though.

Hell - I was 4 when I got my benjamin pump air rifle... I was 6 when I got a 410 and I was 9 when I got a 12 gauge. Age is right folks. Take him out and shoot cans, targets, skeet.

yeah, I'm sure the noise is the biggest factor. After he saw the doe and "buck fever" set in none of that mattered. I asked him did it kick and he said "no,but it sure was loud!" So maybe some earplugs might do the trick. A .223 might be a good one to consider.

I think that would help tremendously. I was intimidated by my first deer rifle as well and noise was probably the biggest factor. I had a remington youth model .243 bolt action. Still have the gun and loan it to kids and women that would hunt with us.

Obviously not, he shot it once and now is scared, he was not ready for that gun. He will let you know when he is ready to shoot it again. If it is the sound, use ear muffs. Just don't be "that dad" that is forcing it on him.
