Why is winning just not enough?

This is a serious question. Would fans be happier if we won big in 3 of the 4 remaining SEC games, but lost a close 1 to Bama. Or win all 4 games by close margins, on our way a an undefeated season.
On 3 different occasions I've heard people say " Les Miles will never be an SEC coach because he doesn't win by large margins. What the hell does that mean. Should I assume winning big, but not winning the west is better than winning it all by the slimmest of margins. If anyone can explain why winning is not enough, please do.

The question is for those who want to win big. I think it's fair to give them a chance to explain their arguement.

Because "style points" count in rankings. Voter "perception" makes an impact on rankings...
Like it or not.

oh. i doubt you will have many argue that they want to win big in three out of four games and trade 3 wins for 4, though.

OK first off, anyone that means exactly what you said is stupid.
Secondly, I am going to assume they meant something else. That if you don't win certain games big it is an indicator of how good the team is. Play like that (Say a close one to Vandy) when you play a better team and you will lose.

It's not about winning "big."
It's about coaching the team to play up to its potential for four quarters of a game.

Your problem is that you can't separate the argument, think in context. Like many on here, you think in absolutes or black and white.
The argument is not that he can't "win the west" by large margins, it's winning the games we SHOULD conceivably win by large margins...like where we have a huge talent disparity or where another team is depleted (LaTech and every other game last year, UNC this year, WVU).
Why can't we stomp another team where we are clearly the better team? Why do we have no killer instinct in these games? Is it Miles or Crowton who is holding the team back? Why does the team make so many mistakes in critical situations? (3rd and short, fumbles and INT's in the redzone, etc.) It shows a lack of attention to details by the players and coaches. We can go into the Swamp and beat the a top 10 team, but yet we can't put an arse whooping on another team that is not even in the same class as us? These are serious questions that don't have an answer.
No one would care if we barely beat the SEC West teams and won the SECW, if we actually showed some killer instinct and put away the other teams that are on our schedule.

Not to worry, Les always plays down to the competition. Probably 28 to 17 LSU.

you are not going to get a straight answer that makes any logical sense

bad example, LSU was missing 4-5 starters in that game as well and WVU has the talent to play with anybody in the country.

quote:Wrong, it's a perfect example. The starters we were missing were not key playmakers and we had plenty of depth to back them up. UNC was missing it's 2 major playmakers on offense, and about 4 of it's major playmakers on defense, and we scored ZERO fricking points in the 2nd half when they should have been worn down. No excuse.

to a certain segment of fans they would prefer to win all 4 but would enjoy the season more winning big 3 times and losing a close one.

Is breathing just good enough for you? No, you want entertainment so you can enjoy life.
We have all this talent that we want to see explode but we have to accept the fact that we have a coach that holds us back rather than maximize his resources.

Easy question.... prefer to win-out, even if by close margins. In fact, I prefer close games to blowouts (as long as LSU wins), keeps them entertaining and exciting, keeps the fanbase excited and riled up, makes for a helluva lot more interesting football.
I'd prefer a repeat of 2007, than for LSU to go 14-0 and win every game by a 20 to 40 point margin. I guess my perspective may be a little different than most of the ranters here.

quote:If you want the team to play 'down' against weaker teams and not up to it's potential then that's what you'll get. No one in the thread has said "14-0 and a 20 point margin" except you and that's just another example of the extremaphiles on this board. The problem with 'barely winning' is that eventually you won't, there are teams that are dangerous enough to take advantage of a close game and come back and bite you. You have to put the weak teams away, make a statement, gain confidence, and then play the tough teams down to the wire if that's what it takes.

No excuse
So why do you persist on making excuses for LSU's wins? Why are they tainted in our mind? Just because LSU didn't light up the scoreboard enough to suit YOU? Just because the wins didn't give YOU bragging points at the office?
WOW LSU football exists to make YOU feel good.
