re: Best caliber gun for long distance target shooting?

I have a .338 mag and its great for mid-long distance target shooting. Have shot the .338 Lapua before and it is an amazing round. Essentially a .416 Rigby case necked down to accept a .338 projectile.

It will kick the shite out of you too and imo is no fun to shoot. Just sayin.

and the damn ammo is over $60/box

It's not that bad. I put a butt pad on the thing and it's tolerable.

I'd bet that than none of them would beat a .257 Weatherby.
Good choice but as in the.264 Win Mag hand loading is a must due to cartridge availability and price. I would put my .264 up against a .257. They are both great, kinda exotic calibers.
In the final analysis...who's squeezing the trigger makes the difference.

also are you looking to punch holes in paper or actually kill something?

I suggested a .264 Win. Mag. I own a .260 Rem, .270 Rem and .243 Win. The .264 Win Mag wins hand down and will out preform any caliber you listed.
Maybe in your case, but when most benchrest shooters are moving to 6 mm br there has to be a reason. Afterall it is 6mm BenchRest.

Maybe true, but you don't want me shooting at you from 400 yards.

whetherby 300.... 180 grain. imo damn gun is a beast. longest shot was 480 but i no it can go futher than 500

A 270 STW is another good one with 180 grain bullet. 1000 yards all day long.

Thought they all converted over to the .50 but Im not in military so what do I know.
They all use the Barrett .50 caliber too but you don't really need something quite that big at distances under 1000 to 1500 yards.

Supposedly a barrel burner. Never shot one but that is the stigma of the caliber. Heard it shoots flat as hell though

Not all "snipers" in the military use a 50 cal. Absolutely not even close to being a true statement. In fact Remington was just awarded a contract to "upgrade" some M24s from 308 to 300 Win Mag.

This is true. I hand load and I don't shoot mine that much....only enough to know where I can place my shot at 400 yards.
Had it for 30 years and it shoots fine. It will reach out and touch em with serious energy.

This round is a monster.
I have a 300 win mag that I use. Bullets get very expensive for a day at the range when you start getting into that. Every time I squeeze the trigger it cost me $2.60.

Ya, but when you can shoot one hole, you save on targets.

lol I
I do have to agree on this. Plus it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
