Early 1970's qb who split time with Bert Jones...

Paul Lyons was the guy....Mike Miley was the heir apparent to both Jones and Lyons but ended up playing baseball....

I believe you are thinking of Butch Duhe (from Holy Cross IIRC). He passed away suddenly just before the start of the season--it was a few years before Jones, Lyons and Miley.
Miley had one very good year and ChollyMac decided to switch to the veer offense to take advantage of his skills. Coach Mac was caught offguard when Miley then took the pro baseball offer. We then played Carl Otis Trimble at qb (LSU's first African American qb) who also died tragically some years later.
