Drink cold water to burn calories?

Someone had posted on the earlier diet thread that since your body had to burn calories to raise the temperature of cold liquids to core temperature, you could lose weight by drinking cold water. Hmmm, I know that is true, but how much and how cold, I had a hard time believing that it could be effective weight loss strategy or we'd all be skinny. So I had to do the calculation.

Using this standard definition: A food calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 °C.

If you drink 16 oz of 40F water you will burn .923 calories to raise it to body temperature. You will burn more calories than that walking back & forth to the bathroom getting rid of all that water you drank.

Just call me the TD food board mythbuster.

I didn't say it was some miracle weight loss supplement.

This article begs to differ with you. Drinking 8 glasses of cold water a day can burn 70 calories a day. Running a mile only burns 100.

I'm not Mr. Wizard so I have no idea if true, but there are lots of web sites that say it works.

If true, that is 7.3 pounds a year doing nothing more than drinking ice cold water.
