We All Care A Lot

quote:This is not a trolling thread. DD has expressed the conundrum that all LSU fans are truly concerned about. We read how well the practices go. We hear how our skill players on offense are progressing. But in real game time, we see the struggle, the unproductive passing game, the dropped passes, the muffed running plays, the failure to put in certain talented game-changers on any kind of regular basis, and the predictability of so many of the offensive calls that do not showcase the talent in ways this same talent can make a game-changing difference.
"I really do not know what the problem is on offense. I have been to practice and have seen Jordan Jefferson throw the football 50 yards with a flip of the wrist right on target. I have seen Jarrett Lee thread a needle on medium to long passes, and I have seen Rueben Randle, Terrance Toliver and Russell Shepard make great catches in practice. In the 2009 season, the offensive line was blamed for much of the problem since they allowed 34 sacks on the season. So far this season, the offensive line has played very well and the running game has been more productive, but the passing game has declined." (Dandy Don - Sept 21 - today)
What are we supposed to think, except that something is badly wrong with our offensive play calling, game plan, scheme, or whatever? And whose responsibility is it to fix this problem?
I know this has been hashed and re-hashed a thousand times, but we're getting into a much more serious part of the LSU schedule now. So could we resist name-calling and smart-azz comments, and really talk about this? We're all LSU fans here, and we all care a lot.

Not throwing the ball enough, and calling quick patterns when we do throw, is the reason our passing offense has been so pedestrian.
Anyone who tells you different, does so only to attack a particular player.

It is obvious the more I watch the team, that Gary Crowton is the problem, he has to go. I don't think you gain anything by fireing him at this point, but this should be his last year.

the only way to develop a quaterback is to let him throw the ball down the field - Chris Carter, this morning on Mike and Mike.

Point 1 - what Dandy sees in practice is basically warmups and drills...much like watching a batter in batting practice or a golfer on a practice green. So I wouldn't put too much stock in that.
Much of Les' issues as a coach can be boiled down to the common phrase "Good is the enemy of Great". He really believes that the QB is "close", and if they keep working on in, he'll get it. The problem is, sometimes you have to realize that what you're doing may never work, you may have peaked. But when you're "close", that's a difficult decision to make.
Personally, I have seen enough good things out of this team so far that I'm going to enjoy the season and let it play out. I think there is enough variety in the offense to score some points, although it may be frustrating to watch.

quote:I am unable to go beyond this same conclusion. It looks to me like GC has held up all QB development, seems unable to make adjustments to some incredibly talented personnel, and doesn't seem willing to stick his neck out on updating his schemes. I've noticed lately that CLM has been carrying the playbook around on the sidelines and seems much more involved in the offensive play of this team. That's usually when the I-formation is being used and when LSU is looking like it has something more on offense than its previously shown under strict GC control. I truly hope this will be GC's last year at LSU. A different OC could make all the difference for our two QBs and receivers, and for our stable of fine RBs.
this should be his last year.

Im starting to wonder if CLM took over (supposedly) too late. Hopefully GC hasnt put LSU in too big of hole that they can't climb out of. I can't see GC being the OC next year.

How can we see more of Michael Ford? We have not seen him. Les wants to get him in the game. What is stopping him? Does not make sense.

quote:This is a true puzzle. I think CLM needs to get even more control over the offense and turn what remains of GC's tenure into a spectator role. GC seems to have too much say-so over what our offense is or is not doing, and that is clearly not working.
...Michael Ford? We have not seen him. Les wants to get him in the game. What is stopping him? Does not make sense.
And @ Choctaw...
quote:Agreed. I believe from what I have seen so far that LSU can pull out of the offensive tailspin we've witnessed these last 2 seasons. Last year, OL was a problem, not this year. So play calling is a bigger issue than it looked to be last season when the OL weaknesses kind of hid that fact. Now it's out in the open and can be dealt with. Am hoping that's what CLM is doing as he now has that playbook in hand along the sidelines.
Hopefully GC hasnt put LSU in too big of hole that they can't climb out of.

Wrong. Ford has played.

i think the vandy game presented a conundrum for the coaching staff. our passing game was awful. their response was to simplify and depend on the running game only passing when they felt it necessary. after the last two years, i think the staff is a bit paranoid. it seems as if a portion of our fan base ignors these facts as miles made no secret of it. what i am saying is we saw what miles told us they would do. we don't have to guess why; they are worried about JJ's confidence levels. like a pitcher in baseball, the "head game" is damn important. the good, no great news is that JJ played a hell of a game, esp in the second half. his passing was right on. his wr's let him down in a few critical plays that,if completed, would have had the fans much happier about the situation. this year, unlike last year, i see that we have the ability to improve adn i think we will. i do not buy the mantra that i am reading that there is no way we can beat the better teams and then interjecting the game plan from last weeks game into the future games. msu is a different team than florida, bama, etc. we will game plan them differently. we will need our passing game to win those games. if JJ doesn't lay an egg like the vandy game, i think our passing game will show up. funny how no one is bashing our wr's. they need to catch the passes that hit them in the damn hands!

As I said over and over yesterday, he's saying he didn't think the game lined up for putting Ford in.

Ford will not make or break our offense. JJ will make or break our offense unless he gets injured on an option or qb keeper.

Getting Deangelo back at TE has to help. If I was the QB my go to receiver would be Randle, and I would build off of that. It seems like we haven't run a lot of the short passes that Lafell used to run so well and were a big part of the gameplan, but we have had some drops.

This is NOT a flame or troll, I feel about the same way as you guys. Just wondering, out of the 55 plays we ran saturday night how many do you think should have been downfield shots? I can remember 2, maybe 3. While not great it is better than we saw against Vandy. I hope they use the play action and go for it a few more times vs WVU.
Though the biggest issue seems to be no attempt to pass more on 1st down. You can try to pass it on 3rd and 8 all ya want, it isn't fooling anyone.

Three plays in one game is not my definition of playing. The dude has not gotten a fair shot.

Well you can't blame it on Les only playing upper class men as Blue has gotten quite a few carries and Ware has been more active than Ford. There is a lot of competition for that position.

I don't know an exact number... but I think that there are deeper routes on some of the plays that were called Sat., and JJ just didn't go to the deep reciever. I remember one pass that was caught, I think by Tolliver... and on replay, you could see another reciever wide, WIDE, open that did't get a glance.
Now, I still hold fast the Crowton has to go... really. He's not cutting it. But I also think that JJ still isn't always making the most out of the plays they're giving him. And for the rcord, I think that's Crowton's fault, too! JJ should be more comfortable behind center by now, and I blame the OC for the fact that he doesn't seem to be....
