...yes or no.

Why I ask is when my son and I were hunting this weekend, several birds landed on a powerline w/in easy shooting range. I did not let him take the shot because a.) potential damage to the line, and b.) it just isn't very sporting. What say you?

No

Also alot of times power lines mean roadways / highways. never a good idea to be shooting close or over a road

I have a friend who is linesman for a power company. We got him to come intstall 5 poles in the ground and run a cable right down the center of our dove field. It isn't a hot line. The doves land on it before they land on the ground. We don't always shoot them off of the line, but normally let little kids take turns popping them off.

It was a safe shot in this regard, but I know exactly what you mean.

I've got a sweet powerline set. Get regular dove decoys, tie fishing line around its neck, chunk the decoy over the top powerline, pull it up to where it looks like it's sitting on the bottom line, and tie the loose end off on a tree, stick or something. Put 2 of those out, with 2 mojos, 2 cases of shells, and two cases of beer. Not sure what me dove tally is so far this year, but it's in the 300 range.

That's what I'm talking about.

P.S. I pop them off the line. I'm not ashamed to say so.

The only way I don't pop em off the line is if they're too close. Partly because of potential damage to the powerline, but mainly because of not wanting to blow the everlovin shite out of the dove and render him inedible.

This, and people can rationalize it all they want.

Ok for kids IMO. We wait until they fly off. Sometimes we'll shoot in the air to get them to fly off though.

Hell yea. We shot so many off a power line one day, It blacked out a small town. Funny thing, my mom was at the liquor store when it happened and couldn't get her 12pk of Busch Lite.

Let the kids shoot 'em off lines, in trees, doesn't matter when they go to school and get to say they killed "X" number.

I shot tons of birds off power lines when I was a kid and never did any damage to the lines that I'm aware of.

The only part of a power transmission line that is steel is the core; the outer layer of the line is aluminum.

I would think that you could do some damage to the aluminum by shooting it.

We used to do this with our pellet guns when we were kids.

Same here. I wish those Eurasian Collareds were around way back then. That's a big bird and a mighty tempting target to a kid with a Benjamin! I'm sure they're tasty as well.

i dove hunted with some friends in South Carolina who were all very good shots. their favorite saying was dont ever shoot one flying if you think he will light on the wire. They used zebco rod and reels to cast their dove decpys over the line
