and i just watched my first blu ray, the book of eli. HOLY CRAP. Its incredible and while the picture is great i think I am more impressed with the sound quality. I don't ever remember my surround sound, being that good.

Not all Blu-Ray flicks are created equal. Some movies (like 28 Days Later, for example) get a crappy transfer to Blu-Ray, so you don't get your money's worth.
Netflix the following on Blu-Ray:
Pitch Black
No Country for Old Men
The Fall
Pan's Labyrinth

The Dark Knight is also a must watch on Blu-Ray.

Once you've seen a few, you'll never want to watch a DVD when the same film is available on Blu-Ray. I noticed that Redbox wised up a few weeks ago and started offering a handful of titles on Blu-Ray for $1.50 a night.

I own this movie. It is by far one of the best if not the best looking blu ray I have seen and I have seen quite a few.
The newer movies always look amazing though. I've been meaning to netflix clash of the titans, because while the movie might suck I bet it looks frickin awesome.

I had no idea how awesome a picture my TV actually had until I first watched a blue ray.

Dark Knight
Iron Man
Rambo IV
Blu Ray isn't just about excellent video. The audio is normally much better than DVD especially if you have a system that can take advantage of it.

For sound I really like Master & Commander (the first battle scene) and Blackhawk Down.

I got the Blu-Ray from Redbox for it.
It looked good, I don't remember it looking amazing.

BluRay won't last long. Streaming internet HD is the future.

Can you play regular DVDs on a Blu Ray player?

How much better is the quality of a blu ray than a DVD on a non HDTV?
I don't have an HDTV. I'm going to get one. But don't see the point when my current TV is perfectly fine.
Do you need an HDTV to appreciate the Blu Ray or is it noticeable on a non HDTV?

not sure about it on a non HD TV. I know regular DVDs played on a blu ray player get their quality upped a hair (from what I've been told)
I would think that you'd want an HD TV and blu ray to get all of the effects.
And a badass speaker system as well.

I think it would be worth it if you don't have an HDTV but have surround sound.
