SEC refs have no idea WTF theyre doing

i know this didnt effect the outcome, but its haunting me. if an SEC crew doesn't even know that a punt that goes into the end zone is a touchback, what DO they know?
this is as basic as it gets.
the goal line, of course, is not on the field. its in the end zone. Ron Brooks had his entire foot on the goal line, AND the ball was 3 yards deep.
there's two refs staring right at this. no whistle. they have no idea what to do.
the SEC started a 15-year, 2.25 billion dollar contract with espn last year, is it really too much to ask for even mildly competnt officials?

FWIW I thought it was a GREAT play in real time

dude, it was bang-bang. I was on the LSU sideline right on the goal line and the near side ref called it a touchback immediately. I never heard a whistle, but it was called right away

It is not just SEC refs. They are all like that. They are also human and therefor subject to err. One of my good friends was an SEC Field Judge for 25 years and some of the stories are hilarious. He was a member of the crew on the "Who has the ball" play after LSU recovered the muff punt against Bama. While they were not supposed to be looking at the Jumbotron, that is how the call got made correctly (for those that do not remember this game, it was before replay).

Of all the screwed up calls I've seen from SEC refs last few years, this is the least troubling. 2006 alone was enough for me to question the competency/partiality of every SEC ref.

What about the BLATENT non-call of PI on the last play?????

um, well, the back judge and side judge stood there talking about it, and the side judge ruled it LSU's ball.
and if that was "bang-bang", then were fricked. that play was actually kind of slow.

yea i was in this same area and you really couldnt tell in real time. Granted I was 29 rows up and they were 5 yards away but its still a bang bang play as he said.

Dude, even Pianalto(sp?) said there was no interference on the play. He said even though the hand was on him it didnt pull him away from the ball or anything and he had every opportunity to catch the ball and he dropped it.

SEC Refs do what Bama tells them to do.

you're right of course, but this is killing me because two refs stood right there, with no one in their way, on a call that is as simple and routine as it gets, in the second quarter of a tie game, there was no pressure...
AND THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO frickING DO.
if they cant even do THIS, honestly, what CAN they do? how bad is this gonna get?

You are an idiot troll. Do you even know the meaning of the word BLATENT.

It wasn't a touchback until the ball was downed. Once LSU batted the ball back into the field of play without touching it, UNC could have picked the ball up and run with it. So, the referees did the right thing by throwing the bean bag into the endzone (as they both did) and waiting for the ball to be downed.
This is from the NCAA rule book:
quote:
Team A snaps at the 50-yard line and punts. The kick is untouched beyond the neutral zone when A88 reaches across Team B’s goal line and bats the ball back into the field of play. B22 recovers at the B-2 and advances to the B-12 where A66 tackles him by pulling his facemask. RULING: Team B may accept the penalty, which cancels the illegal touching privilege, and have first and 10 at the B-27.
Now, I have no idea why the referee pointed in LSU's direction after the muff when he had already thrown his bean bag into the endzone, but in the end they got the call correct.

When the ball crosses the plane, even if his foot doesn't touch the line, doesn't that make it a touchback? Or is that the NFL?
Posted on 9/7/10 at 6:41 pm to MastrShake
The official on the spot immediately threw his bean bag or whatever and signaled touchback, but the other officials obviously didn't pay him any mind. It did not go to replay, if I recall correctly.
They actually did the right thing and conferred with each other. The bottom line is they got the call right in the end. That's all that matters.

If it makes you feel any better, I think it was a Big 11 crew that called the game.

No, that was an SEC crew. That referee has been an SEC ref for years and years.

Ya know I could be absolutely wrong, but weren't the refs who did this game from the Big 10?
