Graduate School requirements

When they say have an undergrad gpa of 3.0 or higher, is this a hard and fast rule? Seems sort of silly especially with varying difficulty between majors. Its also silly cause i didn't have one.

Depends on the type of grad school and the location of said school.

Then no, it's not strict. I know a guy with a 2.9 and like a 700 GMAT that got in to LSU MBA.
ETA: It's relatively strict, but not hard and fast.

They might give you some slack if you're close. I've heard of people getting into the MBA program with GMAT scores below the "required" 600, so I'd guess they could do the same for GPA.

I plan on taking the GMAT soon and i do pretty well on standardized test, but i wanted to make sure before i waste my time. I had ~ a 2.8, but its in mechanical engineering. Also how long are GMAT scores good for? Anyone know?

I'll go out on a limb and say they aren't white males. I know several students like this, but they all make the program "more diverse". 600 is a pretty hard line to break, expecially if you don't fill some quota.
GPA isn't all that important, as long as it isn't below a 2.75, or so. The programs are ranked on GMAT scores, so that's what they care about. IF you have a 700+ on your GMAT and an online undergrad, they are going to take you.

Again, it depends on the specific school.
One MBA with which I am familiar (TAMU-Commerce) requires the GMAT score must be 500 with a verbal of 20 or better, or GRE score of 1000 or better. And, it must have been within the past five years.
However, the GMAT requirement is waived if the undergraduate GPA (doesn't matter in what major) is 3.0 or better.

5 years is standard.

The scale is 400-800. 500 is like the equivalent of a 15 on your ACT. That's absurd.

I had only a 2.72 in undergrad and got in a double masters program with a 744 GMAT.
Not a concerete rule.

Someone should at least check whether or not scores are possible before making shite up on the internet.

That puts him taking the GMAT in the early 2000's.

i just hope somebody will hire me for a job with high $$$ if i learn some programming skills.

Nobody has really mentioned that they also look at your time in the workforce. If you have been working in a professional industry for 10 years they are not near as concerned about your GPA and GMAT scores.

I worked in grad school admissions at LSU up until about 2003 and I can tell you the most important thing is does the department want to accept you. If the graduate adviser is willing to write a petition (one paragraph) asking the grad school to waive the 3.0 requirement, then that is usually all it takes. But that also depends on the grad school dean, some of them are more or less strict on this rule.
Talk to the business school grad adviser and they will know if you can get in. There is also what is called a non-matriculating application that you only need a 2.5 for, often times you can do that for a semester to demonstrate that you can handle grad school and have all that credit count towards your degree if you are accepted the following semester.

I'm sorry, but that's pretty darn pathetic if they are letting kids into a GRADUATE school program with a 2.5 GPA, even if it's conditional.

I don't agree. How many guys are worried about their GPA when they are 17-21? I was chasing skirts and drinking beer and that is all I cared about. People grow up. Do you think a 30 year old that has been in the workforce for 10 years is less qualified to go to grad school then a 21 year old with a 4.0? You may, I don't.

If the 30 year old worked his arse off for 10 years and showed his maturity, then sure. I'm talking about your typical 22-25 year old applicant who graduated with a 2.5 in econ, did well on the GMAT, and then got in the program because he passed the first semester. I don't think those are worthy of admittance to a professional school.
