Just starting my search for a new shotgun for quail hunting. I would like to know what you'll think would be a good shotgun to look at.

you can't really go wrong with a gun for quail hunting. It's not like you'll need 3 1/2's or need to be concerned with gas/inertia. Most quail hunter's prefer a traditional (often stylish or rare) firearm. I would look into L.C. Smith's, various browning's (superposed*, citori). Ruger's Red Lable is a solid gun too, as well as Winchester's 101.

I would also recommend the CZ...its a great looking upland game gun. It will be my next shotgun.
Also I know these guys are throwing out 16g. 28g. yes those are fine but they can be hard to find shells for if you are in the middle of no where on a quail hunt. Get a common gauge, 20 or 12. 20 would be the way I would lean if it was strictly going to be a quail gun. May want to up it to a 12 if pheasant hunting is also an option.

quote:This is kind of true, and I mostly hunt a 20ga for everything, but I do handload my own .410's and that caliber might be a little less rare than 16ga or 28ga. Handloading is easy, cheap and fun. And you can really customize the load to do whatever you want.

Stoeger actually makes an Upland Combo, that has 12ga/20ga or 20ga/28ga barrels. While its not nearly as finely finished as a CZ, Browning, etc., its a solid SxS gun for hunting.
I have fallen in love with break action guns. Singles, O/U's, and SxS's. I am hooked.

For as nice as the CZ's are they are hard to find in my part of the world. No one seems to carry them, they will order me one but no seems to have a good selection to choose from and shoulder up.

Get a 12 ga with wind chokes. Never know what you may want to hunt later.

for quail an o/u Beretta in .20 gauge is very good.
.12 gauge can get a little heavy after walking all day.
I'd love to have a .16 gauge but shells are a little hard to find and pretty expensive.

Do you currently have any shotguns?

Thanks for all your help.Sorry I started this tread and bailed out. I have been having some internet issues.
I just started quail hunting over the last year. I have and old Remington 870 express 12 guage. It seems to be a bit much. I been shooting mainly wild quail but will probably hunt some pen quail with one of my buddies. Price isnt that big a deal, I am not looking for a gold plated shotgun or anything real fancy but at the same time I would like to get a nice well made shotgun.
PS I know shotgun is one word. Damn I phone auto corrects some times and I miss it.

I would look to either an o/u or a sxs in 20 gauge. Probably something in a 28” barrel length. If you go with a sxs you will need to determine if you like single or double triggers. Handling a well balanced game gun can be like a wand in your hands. You need to handle guns to determine your preference, where do you live?
I would not hesitate to look at the used gun market, quality used guns of much better quality than new guns of comparable price are available, though you might have to buy over the internet and educate yourself. I have bought all of my sxs over the internet with no problems. Be forwarded quality sxs or o/u shotguns will run you $750 up…
I mainly hunt woodcock and my main carry gun is a 20 gauge sxs with 26” barrels, straight stock and double triggers.
This website is a good reference for sxs’s LINK

This is a quail, and I walked it off it was 18-20 paces away from were I shot it with a 28 ga beretta 8 shot. I dont think the shot spread at all.
