amazing blues/juke joint, but i've never had the food.

Is it legit soul food when you are checking out a show?

i think the record spin with Teddy on the mic could be fun, but i've never been.

It also might be awful.

Get the Fried Pork Chop Sandwich. It's simple and awesome.

ETA: The place is fun if you go with a big group. If it's just you and a couple of other people, I do not think it is that enjoyable. I've been once and we had a better time during Teddy's "mic mix" than the live music.

One more thing - the cover was ridiculously high. Like $20. Not sure if its like that all the time, or it was like that just that night (and they saw we had a big group)?

i've only been a couple of times but i remember it being at least $10, if not more. But, i saw really good music at a great place, and the buckets of beer were cheap so it was worth it.

Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone here is interested in original, live music.....there is a place off of Florida Blvd called the Red Dragon Listening Room. It's right before the bus station on the right. I know it's in the hood, but there is fenced in parking and a off-duty cop that stands out front. But anyways, it's live music and BYOB. It's usually $20 for the show with all of the money going to the artist. The place only holds about 100 people so it's intimate. It's a listening room, so there is no talking during the show. They don't have a website but their schedule is usually listed in the paper or one of the BR websites.

Teddy raised the cover because he is loosing money i guess. I have been 4 times in the last 3 months and its at least a 15 dollar cover each time. but teddy on the records spinning is funny as hell. think bluesman taste and a strip club voice.

i went to Teddy's Juke Joint last night to see Josh Garrett & the Bottom Line. Its def a dive, but its probably going to be my favorite spot since discovering Chelseas.

When i walked in, i ran into a friend. He was eating the fried chicken. I asked him to recommend some things on the menu for me and my friend to get. He said that the fried chicken was the best & surpassed all by far.

So, we both got fried chicken wings. I got them straight up. My friend got them with wing sauce. We were warned that they were hot, but got them anyway. I loved the chicken. It was fresh and crispy & the batter was flavorful (but not spicy). I got red beans & a salad. I wouldnt order the red beans as an entree because i found the sausage to be underwhelming in flavor, but they complimented the chicken well. I ended up adding some crystal hot sauce to the beans for a little kick.

the salad was lettuce, a tomato & i got red wine vinaigrette. I had order envy of my friend who got a well executed potato salad ( only complaint was that there were no eggs in it.)

My friend's wings were hot, but tolerable. I think they must just tell people that because they may have had complaints from customers who cant handle heat.

we ended up not drinking because i got started early yesterday at brunch and had to get to work early today. so i cant comment on how pricey the drinks are. If anyone knows, feel free to chime in.

i will say it seems like they consistently have a significant cover. i talked to teddy & asked him about it. he said he has to charge that so he can afford to pay the band. Ive heard that sometimes it could be as high as 20. last night it was 15 bucks. i didnt mind paying that for good music. but, some people dont choose to swing it.

however, the food was 23 bucks for two fried chicken plates with two sides, and two soft drinks. we tipped 7 bucks. cover was 15 a piece. so we had an excellent meal with more food than we could eat and awesome entertainment for 30 a head. id rather pay that than 80 bucks at j. alexander's for crap service & cold food.

that is going to be my new favorite spot. i enjoyed myself so much last night, i felt like it was my birthday. Teddy recommended I try the pork chop sammich next time i go, which i hope is sooner than later.

Gregg Wright played a while back and considered going, wasn;t sure about the type of crowd.

I know he will be back in town again next month and might check it out if he playes there again

BTW - I have met Teddy and he's a cool guy in my book.

Yes, I've been to the new place once for Chris Knight a couple months back. I'm not sure if the crowd is the same for every show, but I know they have a lot of regulars that go.

Jack Williams is playing on Sunday, Sept. 5. Guy Clark is playing 2 shows in Oct but I think they are both soldout already. Those tickets were $100 apiece.
