TV broadcast scoreboard overlays

Watching old games on ESPN classic and CBS college sports is painful when they don't have that scoreboard overlay graphic. When did networks start using them? Mid 90s? And what did yall do before they had them?

my grandpa hated it when they first did that because they only had one TV and my grandma would only watch the Saints and Tigers. He used the "I just want to check the score" excuse and would get to watch until somebody scored or it went to break without her getting upset.
When they added the scoreboard, he could only watch a few seconds unless I was over there in charge of the tv.

I remember when this happened. FOX was the first network to do this when they first got the NFC contract away from CBS in 1994. The other networks followed suit. It really was a great change to TV broadcasting of sports. I don't think any other network was showing the scores on the screen for any other sport other than periodically flashing it or at commercial breaks.

Yeah, I believe Fox started it with the Pill shaped image in the top left or top right with white-grey font.

Hm very interesting. Well I'm glad we have it in this day and age, because watching those old games just frustrates me if you turn it on in the middle of it and you have no idea what's going on.
Even today, it really bothers me if I can't see how many timeouts each team has left. ESPN/ABC does it right with the little yellow boxes denoting the timeouts. But I think like FOX and CBS still have yet to comprehend that that is a vital piece of information.
