Scotch Drinkers

I'm trying to get into drinking Scotch, usually a bourbon/whiskey drinker.
What is a good starter scotch? I bought some Macallan 12 and although smell is beautiful, the taste is complex but a little too heavy. I put it with 2 cubes to water it down a bit.
As I am typing this thought it is getting easier to sip.

I think right under 45/50. They had a 15 year that was 75/80 - Martin Wine Cellar.

I was in there yesterday and they were having a Chevis Regal 12 year, 18, and 25. At least I think that was the 25. The 25 was pretty good, but I wouldn't pay $165 a bottle for it.
I am still learning about scotches too and would love to hear some tips. Scotch is slowly getting to be my starter drink at nice restaurants.

Doesn't anyone buy American anymore? Stick with the Bourbon.

I find glenfiddich 12 easier to drink than the macallan 12 and it's about 40 bucks.

MaCallan's are usually pretty full bodied. if you want something lighter I would really recommend a blend. Dewar's is perfect for this as well as some of the JW's. you don't have to spend an assload of money to get good scotch and nothing is wrong with a blend. I will put a tasting challenge up to see if anyone can tell the difference between single malt and blends.
personally I like scotch from the Speyside region, but everyone has their own taste. Be careful if it is a "peated" Scotch...that is a whole new kind of taste.

great speyside choice and well within range of most drinkers. I personally like the signature bottle better than the doublewood, but the doublewood tends to be easier to find.
last bottle I bought was it wasn't one I would recommend. Way to bold of a taste that I hear is common with this distiller.
also have been enjoying this...

Generally a 12 yr old scotch is not going to be as smooth as a 15....18 is even more smooth and so forth.

Dewars is a good starter scotch. Look for Glenrothes, a mild Speyside single malt...
