Eating at a Taquería at lunch an hour ago. I inspected my Mexican coke before taking the first sip.

I dunno but I saw Dr. Pepper with real sugar the other day at Rouses. They had it in 12 packs. I miss Pepsi throwback.

They've gotten to the Mexican now as well?

With the push towards throwback drinks and mainstream items ( (Hunts ketchup for instance) promoting "No High Fructose Corn Syrup," it was disheartening to see the Mexican Coke going THIS direction.

That's why I quit buying Mexican Coke bottle case at Sam's a few years back. I now grab Jones Soda Cola in 8 packs canned at Winn-Dixie..only place that has them in BR..used to have them in six pack bottled at Walmart.

Whole Foods 365 brand Cola is ok, but their Black Cherry Cola is much better.

I wonder if it depends on the batch? I looked at the case at Sam's earlier this year, and it was the normal "sugar" version.

I'd fight you for a Jones cream soda in a bottle.

I tried to Google any new news on it. It seems there are some Mexican bottlers that use some 80/20% Sugar vs HFCS? Depending on the region and bottler?

Most companies are responding to Americans rising awareness to HFCS, health causes, and obesity. Most are starting to respond to consumers voting with their wallets, and taking HFCS out of products.

But, Archer Daniels Midland, and their lobby of whores, have subsidies to earn, and money to burn..in buying off idiot politicians.

How insulting is it that America's greatest world export brand and product, Coke, sells natural cane sugar Coke to most of the world, yet stuffs HFCS down the throats of it's own people..because ADM buys sleazy politicos..or John Cougar and Willie Nelson sing some sad songs about farmers needing somebody to eat their corn..or else.

There's a reason much of it largely comes out in stool, intact and undigested, unlike other veggies. There's a reason why American obesity has skyrocketed over the same exact era of corn subsidization, and proliferation in products.

But, even the average head-in-sand type consumer, is getting a clue, change is forthcoming..in fact it's already on the rise!

I wish Barq's Red Cream Soda would offer a Diet/non-HFCS version..and Dr Brown's Cream Sodas would fall in line..in going cane sugar and/or Splenda for a Diet.

That appears to be a after production label that was applied on in the states after coming from Mexico. I doubt it is accurate...

There is a 20% tax on high fructose corn syrup products in Mexico...bottlers still use sugar

Why the change then? The previous mexican cokes had the same post-production label and it didn't list HFCS at all.

Great question. maybe they ran out of the other labels?

Look at the spelling of HFCS - missing a "h" on high and breaks up HFCS into two parts...

Maybe this was printed & applied in Mexico.

20% Tax is gone

Looks like as of January 1, 2008 that 20% tax has been removed.

The label is correct. There are multiple variations on Coke now coming into the US from Mexico. You might get Coke w/Sugar or mixture of sugar and HFCS or HFCS. The label is applied in Mexico. Note the spelling of "Hig".

The problem with sugar is the supply chain. Brazil due to their conversion to ethanol as a fuel source for vehicles has caused Brazil to dedicate more of their product to fuel. The past 2 crops in Brazil have been smaller than expected due to flooding of the fields. They are hoping the next crop will allow more normal export of cane and or raw sugar to the world market. India is also a huge supplier of raw sugar to the world market but it too has had weather issues and sub-normal crops.

And in the US you have the controversy over GMO sugar beets. Plus Imperial's plant in Savannah is still recovering from the 2008 explosion.

Tate & Lyle have left the sugar business in Europe and Pacific Rim and sold out to Domino.

And now you have regional and national players in retail grocery as well as manufacturing wanting to convert from HFCS to sugar. HEB in Texas has a major initiative to convert a number of private label items to pure cane sugar, not beet though due to the GMO thing. They recently introduced HEB cola with pure cane sugar and HEB catsup with sugar and not HFCS. The big food companies like Kraft and General Mills and others are trying to figure out what to do next.

One final factor that is going to hit in 2011 or 2012. China's need for sugar. I've read reports that if the numbers are correct that China could cause a world sugar supply problem like in the mid and late 1970's.

Now....go out and enjoy your sugary stuff.

This is true in addition to America not growing the sugar supply here. Brazil has long been out of the market but they are very successful with ethanol unlike the US. And a coke with that much sugar in it while I admit tastes much better is not any better for you. It will still make you a fatass.

The problem we have is NOT related to sugar consumption. It is related to 3 things.

1. We eat on average 2.3x as much food daily as folks did in the 1950's and 60's.
2. We exercise about 60% less than the same period.
3. HFCS is in 95% of a processed foods and cannot be metabolized by the liver like sugar can.

No reason to blame sugar containing cokes, unless of course you blame Americans for drinking on average 72oz of soft drink a day. And less than 32oz of water a day.

Throwback Pepsi and Throwback Mountain Dew are both available at Target right now. They are probably all over the place, but that is where I happened to see them.
