lot of people were complaining about how they didn't just whip out some humongous bazookas or decided to give themselves the ability to fly. they didn't do this because they were trying to deceive the guy that all this was real life. if they suddenly started using laser beams and what not the mission would have been a complete failure. so ya i think they could dream up anything they wanted (the machines, bazooka) but nothing too grand that would ultimately mess up the mission
