Tactfulness was obviously not the owners/chefs forte. Used to be in the bidness, I don't think I would have handled it that way. Anytime you need a customer to do something, you give em something for free. Like, if yall would vacate the table here is a gift certificate for a free dessert next time you come in. Normally that will do it. Or if you wouldn't mind and finish your visit at the bar, the first rounds on me.
