I'm going at the end of the month. We have heard so many mixed reports from the area. We are just going and hoping for the best.

few tarballs in the sand. Though we didn't get in the water and the tide was going out at the time.

Gulf Shores is open I had a friend call me today and she said they were laying out on the beach and getting in the water.

We are going on the 17th. Either way. its still a great place to have a great time with the beach or without.

I think it's stupid how they continuously open and close the beach in alabama.. in louisiana it is closed whether the oil is visible or not, because it is there.

No beach has been closed in Alabama to date. There is an advisory concerning swimming in the water, but people are still welcome to hang out on the beach. The double reds have been flying but currently that is due to riptides. A woman and child drown there a few days ago. Oil is still coming ashore but clean up crews are cleaning the beach at night so that they are visibly clean each morning, also from balconies you can see slicks and sheens. For July 4th weekend there are very few people there, so I would imagine your vacation could be slightly quieter than previous years. I will be home for a month in a few weeks and I will post pictures then. In the meantime al.com can give you quick updates.

just got back a few hours ago from orange beach. Double red flags, but we were just wading knee deep in the water. Kinda sucks that no one was allowed to really get in. Rip tides were bad. Someone said a total of 4 people died in the past week because of it. Cleanup crews working, but they don't break a sweat. Played golf at the state park course, shot a 89. Got a 30% discount on the condo. Homeboy on the beach was not discounting the lounge chairs though, 25/day.

I live in OB. THe beaches are getting more and more tar balls on them and sand is starting to stain more. Our Boom system in the pass failed the other day. The oil in Bayou St John, Terry Cove and Amica Bay. Some days heavier than others. This is the latest update
GULF SHORES, Ala. -- After a few days of reprieve, oil is threatening to hit Baldwin County's beaches again tomorrow.
According to an afternoon aerial observation, a stretch of oil about 50 yards wide and 15 miles long is about two miles south of the coast.
"If conditions do not change I would expect landfall by morning potentially impacting a large portion of the coast," said George Surry, a battalion chief with Gulf Shores Fire Rescue who was on the observation flight.

I spent the morning doing advance boom Training for the VOO program that I have been working for the last 2 months, then the afternoon at the pool at my parents gulf front condo. The weather was awesome with a real nice breeze and mostly sunny skies. Please come on down and have some fun in our Community, it will be greatly appreciated.
Oh and the braintrust running the VOO program rotated 30+ boats off today, just in time for what appears to be the worst slick yet.

I got back this afternoon. The beach at Florabama was pretty nasty Saturday and the bar was empty during the day. My cousins went last night and they said it was packed. I usually go to Gulf Shores about twice a year. The amount of people there this weekend was low compared to an average weekend last year. All of the marinas were closed, no rentals. Kinda depressing to be honest.

I'm heading there at the end of the week. Staying a The Fish Camp on Wolf Bay. Is there anyone you can recommend for a fishing charter in Wolf Bay? I'm guessing you can still fish in the bay???
Would we be just as well off fishing off of a pier in the bay?

i'm at orange beach right now. at admirals quarters. water is ok and clear but surf is rough. off and on rain today. kids have been on the beach and in the water. doesn't seem to bother them. rip tides have been bad the last few days and a mother and 2 year old drowned at 4 seasons pier. charter fishing is hard to come by. most charter boats are working for bp. you might check with mo at mo's fishing in ob he might know someone. you might be able to go out after dark when the boats stop working for bp. might find a captain that needs to make some extra

I have friends in Gulf Shores and they said they do have a few tar balls on the beach, but nothing too big
