Pacers

quote:

The best player in the Indiana Pacers rookie/free agent camp so far hasn't been Paul George, the No. 10 pick in the recent NBA draft. It also hasn't been Lance Stephenson, the guard out of New York City, or Chris Kramer the former gritty Purdue player.

It's former Louisiana Tech power forward Magnum Rolle who has turned a lot of heads with his play through the first few days of practice.

---

"He's by far been the best player in camp, by a large margin," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "He has dominated everything. He has scored, he has rebounded, he has defended well. He has a surprisingly high basketball IQ.

quote:

Rolle first popped up on the Pacers' radar when he played at LSU. He transferred to Louisiana Tech after his sophomore season because he and his family "were not happy with how my skills were being developed."

These types of statements make my day. If I were Rolle and read this quote I would ask where the surprise element originated.

Raw talent was never an issue, Rolle was a 5-Star out of college.

Easy to blame Brady, he's gone now and a whipping boy but bottom line Rolle was soft here, and IMHO had a questionable attitude.

He was given every chance to earn more playing time and he didn't. He was actually counted on in the season after the Final Four and did not produce. The few good games he did have here he'd mouth off like he was an All-American.

The thing that sticks out in my memory that always irked me is after the Final Four season we got in late on Arthur (who eventually chose Kansas) and almost got him and Rolle whined in the paper about how upset he was that we recruited another post guy.

Didn't he want the team to win? Came of to me it was all about him. Had issues with him from that time on and his play that year did nothing to change that, whether he "thought" his skills were being under-utilized or not.

He finally had a decent year as a 5th-year senior at a mid major. I'm ambivalent to how well he does in the NBA.

That would sound more plausible if this same story didn't play out about 30 times under Brady. He ran off Rolle when the team only had 9 scholarship players on it; plain stupid on multiple levels.

Please name the 30 players who went on to have such great careers after leaving Brady and LSU.

quote:

Brady didn't "run off" Rolle. Assistant coach Nikita Johnson filled Rolle's head with the belief that he was the next Kevin Durant and was being played out of position. Rolle followed the traitorous Johnson to La Tech. I don't believe he reminded anyone of Kevin Durant there and it will be interesting to see just how great of an NBA career he has despite this promising start.

Was this done while Johnson was still at LSU or later on? Seems like a shitty move for an assistant to do that.

It went on during the 2007 season. Rolle's situation was further complicated by the fact he was diagnosed with a herniated disc which slowed his development. He was projected to be the heir to Tyrus Thomas' role. Had he remained at LSU after regaining his health and worked on developing his game against better competition than he had at Tech he may have ended up as a first rounder or high second round.

Brady made alot of mistakes but I was invested as a fan in every minute that Rolle played here and IMHO he need only look in the mirror as to why his potential was never fulfilled at LSU.

There are others I would meet you halfway on of the "30" but Rolle ain't one of them.

i don't know why you are surprised. that is exactly what he did at LSU. Stood out, while everyone else busted their arse on the floor.

don't read any thing into this type of press. young writers are always looking to create a story.

i will log as much playing time in the NBA as Magnum does this season.

Should have read out of high school but to my surprise a friend linked some info to me when Magnum was a soph here to prove it, cause having watched him play I did not believe it.

Rolle wasnt very good while at lsu, but I definitley can understand why he transferred, and why he commented that he did not like how his "skills"were being developed here. Brady wanted rolle to be an post man only, like he did with chris johnson, and he didnt let them shoot... Only when cj showed he could hit a jumper the year after rolle left, brady let him shoot...

Granted, while here Rolle couldnt hit he broadside of a barn, but he was young and he didnt have the green light to play his game... If you know you might get razzed by your coach for eveb takin a shot, it can really hurt your confidence... Obviously the kid found his touch at la tech....

Gentleman, you can def blame that one on john brady...
