Business Board:Is a thank you note?

Is a thank you note to a prominent preceptor in your respective field a cheesy move? a classy move? sucking up?
Basically, she is the first person to give me constructive information on my work albeit somewhat negative but also very helpful to a novice like myself in my respective field.
So would a simple thank you card showing appreciation for her time and comments come off as described above?

So a simple hand off and a thank you won't suffice? How does one handle giving the thank you card?

Mail it to her home, assuming you know her address. If you don't know it, put it in inter-office mail. Don't hand it to her and watch her read it. Too awkward.

I wanted to do it for my last preceptor but I didn't get around to it because I was extremely busy after finishing. I am going to send him something soon and let him know about the job I got and thank him for the letter of recommendation.

No I would obviously walk away after saying thank you and handing it over............but her mailbox is also not necessarily private as other students pick up information from there......I don't trust it..................Don't have her home mailing address...............
ETA: I can get the address but then I feel as though I would be breaching her privacy even though she is the president of a major professional association.

Mail it to her office from your home.
In my opinion, there is never a time where a thank-you is cheesy unless it is insincere.

I agree. I owe a good deal of my success at my last company to one simple little thank you card that I sent someone in another department/location for helping me through a rough patch with a contractor. That man ended up being a director and he had the ear of alot of important people and he never missed a chance to say good things about me or help me out. We weren't really friends and he didn't know a great deal about me, but that car sure went a long ways.

The secret to success in any relationship is being able to fake sincerity......
