Someone mentioned in another thread that Jones may end up going the juco route so he will be draft eligible after one year. That was the first I had heard of this possible scenario. Anyone know if Jones is seriously considering this?

Havnt read that from anywhere credible.

Its actually a pretty dumb comment considering he had the opportunity to go in the first round out of HS. However, he told scouts not to waste thier time that he wants to go to college. Which is why he dropped to the 19th, which tells me alot of scouts really beleived him when he told them he wanted to go to college. Why do that if you were gonna just go to JUCO so you can leave after one year? Is one year of JUCO ball worth giving up 1st or 2nd round money out of HS? No. JMO

I've never seen anything from him or his family that indicates he would go that route, but it is always a possibility for guys that want to get their pro career started asap. Levon Washington did it last year and was actually drafted lower this year.

He didn't tell scouts he wasn't signing. Why go through the trouble of enlisting the Boras Co as your advisor if you have no interest in signing? He dropped because of his asking price, not because of a lack of interest in signing.

ETA: Willing to go to school and wanting to go to school are two different things.

You know what he was asking? Hell, Lee was asking 3-5 mill which is outrageous and he still went in the first round. Jones was a first round talent that dropped all the way to 19. Its hard for me to belevie a talent like that would drop that far without him telling scouts hes not going. Not sure what to do think about the Boras deal though...

Maybe Boras scared some teams away.

He wasn't a sure first round talent. There was talk before the draft that he would slide, although the 19th is a bit extreme. Teams had questions about him. Will he be able to stay at short once he matures and puts on a few pounds? If not, does he have the power to play a corner position? Some scouts do not think his swing will translate with wood.

It is a given he has a high price tag with Boras being involved. Given the Boras rep and the questions above, most teams didn't even seriously scout him during the season.

ETA: Lee didn't talk to scouts this Spring. So while they knew he would be a tough sign, they really didn't know for sure what his asking price was or how seriously he would consider signing.

I wish I could find the thread it was in, but someone mentioned the Astros being interested in using their second pick in the first round on him. The asking price was too high according to the rumor. I'll look for that thread later.

It was a quote from his dad saying the Astros called and asked if he would sign for X amount of dollars if picked there. That isn't unusual at all.

By saying he wasn't a sure first rounder I mean is wasn't a general consensus. He had dropped all the way to 166 on BA's list, 187 on PG's.

Was that linked on this site or did you read it from another source? I'd like to read the article if you could find it for me.

Here are a couple local articles. It actually says the Astros were inquiring with the first pick, but like I said it isn't unusual. Being an Astros fan, I know there were articles and rumors going around that they were having similar conversations and discussion about Deshields and Josh Sale also.

And to LsuTool, the key quote in the article as it relates to our earlier discussion:

quote:

“To sum up a long story, he threw out a big figure, and if they were prepared to meet it, then he would’ve been prepared to sign,” Bubba Jones said. “But he’s got a full scholarship waiting at LSU, and that’s a pretty good option.”

Is throwing out a figure thats so high you know teams will not try to draft you, the same as basically telling scouts, dont waste your time?

No. It isn't like he's asking for a Strasburg type bonus or anything.

He told the Astros that 1.5 mil wasn't enough to get him away from LSU. He was going to go 9th overall.

He is very excited to come to LSU last I heard. He isn't going to go JUCO.

That's simply untrue.

Please enlighten me then. All I am going on is...

quote:

SCOUTING PROFILE (3/1):The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Lee would be getting more attention at the top of the draft if he wasn’t a highly-acclaimed quarterback who has signed to Louisiana State to play both football and baseball. A classic pro-style QB running a spread formation, Lee threw for more than 5,000 yards and 61 touchdowns the past two football seasons. Scouts have acknowledged that Lee is so heavily committed to playing football at LSU that he may be unsignable in this year’s draft. He has chosen not to talk to scouts at all this spring, forcing them to go through his McKinney High teammate Matt Lipka to gather information. On straight ability, Lee might be a first-rounder. He has taken a big step forward this spring, throwing with a sound, easy delivery, some cross-body action on release and a high three-quarters release point. Previously in the 89-91 mph range, Lee’s fastball has frequently been at 94-95 this spring. He also throws a low-80s slider as his out-pitch, and does a very good job commanding his pitches, especially to the outside corner on righthanded hitters.—DAVID RAWNSLEY

quote:

UPDATE (5/15): Lee will likely continue to be one of the draft’s true wild cards up until the first round is called June 7. He has firmly established that he is a first-round talent on the mound, but his signability situation, due to his unbending football commitment to LSU, makes it anyone’s guess as to whether he even has a price to play baseball. He has had a lot of influential baseball people out to see his games this spring. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that a club that drafts him would be able to spread out Lee’s bonus payments over five years—yet that may not even be enough.—DR

I live in Petal myself and really wish I had been able to go see this kid play since he is right down the road. Working 80 hours a week limits things. Do you know the kid or someone close to him?
