A nightmare well is most likely just a tougher well than normal to drill with the given conditions.
this doesnt mean that he knew this was going to happen
it like when you see someone cutting their yard and its 20+ acres, you'll say "that must be a nightmare to cut"

OK ... to the layperson it sounds BAD! I took it as they were almost expecting something to happen.

I've been on tons of "nightmare" wells.

Nightmare wells happen all the time. Responsible operators deal with them on a daily basis and follow procedures that have proven reliable to complete them.

"The well from hell" frequent term in the industry.

BOTTOM frickING LINE....IF THEY FOLLOW THE frickING RECOMENDED/PROPER PROCEEDURES THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN!!!!!
They should go to prison making those choices.
Lift the drilling ban, make it criminal not to follow allt he proceedings that are in place and I promise, no one will go to jail for an oil companies risking lives for profit!! Everyone would do as told.
Also, give a $100,000 whistleblower reward for anyone turning in the oil company trying to force them not to follow the proper proceedure, and make the oil company pay it if proven!!!
It would stop today.

I think there's another thread on here, linking to an article that indicates the "cop" tasking with stopping them from violating the procedures, either looked the other way, or was eating a donut and not paying attention.
If they follow the guidelines, the this doesn't happen. But if nobody stops them from drilling when violating the guidelines... until an accident already occurs... then its going to happen anyway, won't it?

If you read the article, it appears the guy who said that was talking about the delays and being so far behind schedule. Not necessarily that it had difficulties that out of line with any other deepwater well.

I did read it ... I gathered that there was concern ... and not that it was normal. But as I have stated numerous times, I don't know shite about this.
Just that this bothers me: "In an e-mail on April 16, a BP official involved in the decision explained: "It will take 10 hours to install them. I do not like this." Later that day, another official recognized the risks of proceeding with insufficient centralizers but commented: "who cares, it's done, end of story, will probably be fine."
PROBABLY be fine??????? I mean it's not like buying a different shampoo and saying it'll probably be fine. They were playing with safety & people's lives.

Also, I guess I'm reading this thinking about the widow who in an interview with Larry King said that her husband had stated to her that he was uncomfortable and that there were many kicks ... to me that = nightmare.
Posted on 6/17/10 at 5:19 pm to tiger91
Ive been on one well that was having major issues with kicks, was on land though, it made everyone more in-tune with what was going and and more vigilant. You think that's what would have happened here but looks like the complete opposite unfortunately.

Been on a few wells in the GOM where one section we'd lose circulation and get stuck and then a couple hundred feet down we'd take a kick. Its a delicate balance for sure. Nightmare wells happen all the time like I said. But the one thing you dont do on wells like that is cut corners because your life and those of others is at risk on those wells.
Posted on 6/17/10 at 5:44 pm to lsugradman
Anyone have an idea what BP has done with the guys that made the decisions to cut corners on this well? Did they get big raises and a transfer to Siberia to keep them quiet?

Silliness. Anyone ever been on a well that wasn't a "well from hell"? They all have their unique difficulties...
Been in this business almost 20 years and have YET to see the "perfect" project... Don't expect to in the next 20 either...
