Serious question for the serious soccer fans

The thread on how to make it better got me thinking....
If the rules to soccer were tweaked such that 10-8 and 9-7 type scores were commonplace, but it greatly improved the popularity of the sport in the US, would you be in favor of it?
It seems to me that the game will never be popular in the US as it currently stands, and I know a lot of you purists like the 1-0 or 1-1 type games, and want soccer to be more popular in this country. But I don't think you can have it both ways. So which would you prefer?

they could do it like american football and give them 6 or 7 points for each time they score. but that's not happening

I would definitely NOT be in favor of it. I cannot stand when sports trick themselves up to garner more fan support.

Why should the game be changed to please Americans? It is the most popular sport in the world, and most of the world likes it as it is.

It is popular in the United States just not as popular as the Big 3.
MLS already outdraws the NBA and NHL in attendance.
Inflating the scoring deflates the excitement created by each chance on goal. If you are emotionally vested in a match, each shot (even those not saved) keeps you on the edge of your seat. Too many non-soccer fans look at low scores and think that a match lacks excitement.

Answer me this.....can you enjoy a 7-3 football game? If so, then you know how to appreciate a low scoring game.

Well however much you want to award them doesn't matter. I guess I should have clarified - if the rules were tweaked such that there were typically 12, 15, etc. scores per game (regardless of point value), would you favor it?

no, cause then its a different game
we're not going to change the worlds #1 game just cause some people dont like it
and 6-7 point goals would be irrelevant because it's still the same.
Football has TD(6), XP(1or2), FG(3)
Basketball has 1's, 2's, and 3's with an occasional chance for a 4

remember the Auburn v Miss St 3-2 game a few years ago? that was harder to watch than most soccer games

Most MLS soccer specific stadiums seat around 20k (average for an NBA/NHL arena).

Would you prefer if there were typically 12 to 15 scores per game in an NFL or college football game?
How about a baseball game?

BTW, in 2009, the average NFL team scored 0.8 rushing TDs, 1.4 passing TDs, 0.1 INT TDs, and 0.2 Other TDs per game.
So the average NFL team scored 2.5 TDs per game.
This season in the Premiership, the average club scored 1.4 goals per match.
So that one extra score per team really makes things a lot more exciting, eh?

We'll have to agree to disagree (you didn't factor in field goals btw)
Of course, I'm one person, and anecdotal evidence, but I would probably watch more soccer if there were more scoring. I suspect I'm not alone. I'm not telling you to change your game, I'm just telling you it will never gain popularity in this country w/o change.

It already has gained popularity. Look at the ratings for USA vs. England compared to the first four NBA Finals games. Attendance in MLS is rising. I'm tired of rehashing this argument.

Because you're talking about fan excitement and scoring. I take it that you're one of those people who's really excited about field goals.
Just to make your happy, 1.5 field goals are mad per team per game. If we consider a FG a half a score, then I'll amend my statement to say BOY! that 1.75 extra scores adds so much excitement!

According to MLS daily this was true in April, but the current numbers have MLS with an average of 16.4K and the NBA with 17.7K. It's close though which is great for MLS. The Sounders are propping up the attendance numbers big time with their ridiculous 36K a game average.

Philly has a nice 25k or so attendance mark. There are some terrible attendances (Dallas, KC though it's not totally their fault and San Jose) but still the league wide average is growing.
